Senior Writer, Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation

The Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University (the Center) seeks a Senior Writer to join the Communications Practice. The first of its kind in the world, the Center aims to advance the field of public sector innovation by marrying cutting-edge practice with world class research in order to transform the culture of government, deliver exceptional results for residents, and inspire trust in public service.

Our ideal candidate will have strong research skills, be conversant in public administration, public policy, human centered design, data and the public innovation field and will bring experience translating complex topics for a lay audience. Reporting to the Director of Communications, your work will help the public understand municipal government and related opportunities, trends, and challenges.

The Center is committed to addressing structural and entrenched racism and recognizes the public sector’s role in perpetuating these legacies. We are looking for candidates committed to dismantling structural and entrenched racism and addressing these issues, both as we build a new organization and advance this work in communities.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Research, develop, and draft articles, case studies, blog posts and spotlight features
  • Contribute to op-eds, briefings, FAQs, and other materials, which help the public understand the challenges and opportunities around public innovation
  • Prepare executive communications, keynotes, talking points, and other materials for Center leadership
  • Understand, capture, and reflect the knowledge of public innovation experts in written materials
  • Act as a 'translator' to faculty and other academic partners conducting research on behalf of the Center so that their findings are made available to city leaders and staff in an easy to understand and use format
  • Support the creation and distribution of web and social media content
  • Ensure a high level of quality and accuracy in all written materials
  • Provide high-quality copyediting and proofreading
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

    Bachelor’s Degree Three years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

    Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Journalism, Communications, Marketing or related field Experience writing about government, innovation, data, human centered design, policy, leadership or other such matters for a general audience Demonstrated excellence in written skills (writing samples will be required)

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    Experience with WordPress and social media platforms
  • Experience with project management software (Asana) and collaboration tools (Slack)
  • Experience in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and virtual meeting platforms
  • Ability to set priorities and respond quickly as priorities change
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to build good relationships with peers and to interact with diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to collect and synthesize information and provide summary reports
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to a collegial workplace

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
