Salary and Benefits

The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $140,000 to $160,000 per year.

This position is a Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position in the CSU, and serves at the pleasure of the President.

The CSU enjoys a generous benefits program with employer paid life insurance ($100,000), as well as health, dental, and vision insurance with the monthly premium largely paid by the CSU. Additionally, we offer a broad range of other benefits which includes dependent and health care reimbursement accounts, tuition fee waiver, 401k, 457 and 403(b) plans.

The CSU belongs to the CalPERS retirement plan in which medical and dental insurance continues in qualified retirement.

The CSU has 14 paid holidays and the position earns 24 days of vacation and 12 days of sick leave per year.

About the Position

The Associate Dean works with the Dean to further the College's strategic vision and implementation of ongoing and new initiatives. Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean performs a wide range of administrative functions within the college. All of these functions are conducted through a lens of equity, fairness, and the best interests of the students. The Associate Dean is the direct supervisor of 20+ CSUEU and APC staff members in four cooperatives: (a) the College Office; (b) the Credential Student Services Center; (c) the HRT/KIN Cooperative; and (d) the Education Staff Cooperative. Within the College Office, the Associate Dean supervises human resources processing (i.e. hiring and separation of student assistants, staff and faculty), fiscal matters, and college operations and facilities (three buildings, multiple labs, multiple offices). A key role is to provide advice and direction to department chairs with respect to personnel, students, finances, curriculum, and enrollment. The Associate Dean also represents the College in formal grievance issues. In partnership with the Dean, the Associate Dean supports the tenure-track search process, and is the first to respond to faculty and student issues that emerge in departments and programs. The Associate Dean serves on several committees: (a) the CEAS Council of Chairs, (b) the University Educational Effectiveness Council, (c) the CARE Committee, (d) the Student Success/Retention Committee, (e) the Accreditation Coordinating Team (CCTC based), and (f) the CEAS Strategic Planning Committee. They also coordinate and monitor reports required by the University Committee on Academic Planning and Resources, manage and direct elections for faculty University committees, review and process curricular proposals from the five CEAS departments, participate in state and national accreditation as needed, and perform other duties as assigned by the Dean and the University Office of Academic Affairs. The Associate Dean will co-lead the college in its collective goal to embody social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and the humanization of historically marginalized groups.

Responsibilities

Budget/Enrollment
  • Coordinate all phases of planning, implementation, evaluation of CEAS budget, working with department chairs and CEAS budget analyst for assigned programs and departments; Monitor annual department enrollment plans, ensuring that CEAS meets or exceeds enrollment targets established by the Division of Academic Affairs.
  • Review and approve all budget documents forwarded by staff.
  • Review and approve all enrollment/grade forms forwarded by staff and faculty.
  • Ensure that the course schedule is entered according to policy; Approve requests for late course schedule changes.
Faculty Affairs
  • Assist department chairs in preparing annual workloads.
  • Assist department chairs in their work with faculty.
  • Represent CEAS in all formal grievances, as directed by the Associate Provost.
  • Monitor the Retention, Tenure, and Promotion (RTP) process.
  • Monitor the tenure-track search process.
  • Empowers faculty and chairs.
  • Effectively communicates with a range of people, personalities, and positions within the university and external to the university.
Supervision of Staff
  • Serve as immediate supervisor of office staff.
  • Empowers staff.
  • Effectively communicates with a range of people, personalities, and positions within the the college and university.
Student Affairs
  • Serve as student "ombudsman".
  • Receive and process formal complaints submitted by students, after action by the relevant department chair.
  • Receive and process all student petitions (i.e., grade change, late admission, etc.).
  • Establish and maintain a formal process for addressing student grade appeals.
  • Engages in equitable and fair processes to receive and process student complaints and interactions.
Governance
  • Serves on the following committees: (a) the CEAS Council of Chairs, (b) the University Educational Effectiveness Council, (c) the CARE Committee, (d) the Student Success/Retention Committee, (e) the Accreditation Coordinating Team (CCTC based), and (f) the CEAS Strategic Planning Committee.

  • Coordinate and monitor completion of all required reports for University Committee on Academic Planning and Review (CAPR)
  • Manage and direct elections for University Committees.
Curriculum
  • Assist in the development, receipt, and processing of all curricular proposals from the five academic departments in CEAS.
  • Place curriculum proposals on the Council of Chairs agenda and ensure that proposals are forwarded across campus.
  • Manages summer semester and winter intersession course schedules and related curriculum planning.
Key Accountabilities
  • Liaison with University Extension regarding CEAS programs, faculty, staff, and financials.
  • Liaison with Liberal Studies and Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences.
  • Responds to inquiries and concerns from faculty, colleagues, students, and parents regarding college policies and individual student circumstances.
  • Works collaboratively with other offices to encourage, design, and implement programming consistent with college and University goals and objectives.
  • Maintains an empowering disposition that emphasizes humanizing relationships with students, staff, faculty, the Dean, and the CSUEB community.
Required Qualifications
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience working with a diverse student body.
  • An ability to complete multiple tasks on time with attention to detail.
  • A record of higher education level teaching, scholarship, and service requisite for appointment as tenured, full professor in one of CEAS' five academic departments.
  • Experience in leading higher education committees/initiatives.
  • Experience serving as the direct supervisor of staff.
  • Experience in resolving faculty, student, and staff issues.
  • Ability to communicate and relate effectively to all stakeholders within the College, University,
    and community.
  • Outstanding proficiency in teamwork, collaboration, flexibility and organizational problem solving.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; and excellent interpersonal skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned Doctorate degree in Education or field related to to majors in the College of Education and Allied Studies.
  • Minimum of three years' experience as an academic unit leader such as department chair, program director, program manager, administrator, or as an associate dean in higher education.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
  • Experience managing academic budgets and enrollments.
  • Experience developing higher education curricula.
  • Demonstrated success in utilizing data for planning and evaluation of programs and services.
  • Experience in leading or co-leading accreditation or assessment for one or more academic units.
