Data Librarian

Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Libraries seek a collaborative and strategic individual to serve as Data Librarian. This is a teaching-professor-track, faculty position that will be hired at the Teaching Assistant Professor rank and report to the Data and Scholarly Communication Services Section Lead. The Data Librarian will be a member of the Libraries’ Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship, which is part of the Administration Chapter. Please see the Libraries’ organizational chart .

The Data Librarian supports a range of services related to accessing, using, and managing quantitative and other types of scientific data. This position works with student, faculty, and staff users and producers of data, and helps to identify, develop, implement, and assess data services to meet the needs of the CU Boulder community. The Data Librarian provides outreach, consultation, and instruction in various modalities on topics such as finding and accessing particular types of data, using software and tools for working with data (e.g., Python, R, OpenRefine), preparing data for analysis, and managing and publishing data. The Data Librarian fosters relationships with departments, research institutes/centers, and laboratories in order to maximize support across campus, including for the creation of data management plans for grant proposals. In collaboration with CRDDS colleagues, the Data Librarian actively contributes to and promotes data curation services in the open access and open source CU Scholar institutional repository as well as in disciplinary data repositories. Additionally, an essential element of this position is participation in building an inclusive campus environment and the Data Librarian will participate in the Libraries’ Commitment to Diversity and Inclusive Excellence , contributing to cultivating inclusive Libraries and campus environments.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

• Collaborate with CRDDS colleagues to identify, develop, implement, and assess services in support of quantitative and other types of scientific research data.
• Provide a variety of in-person and remote consultation and instruction offerings (e.g., one-on-one consultations, office hours, workshops, for-credit courses, micro-credentials, etc.) on topics related to accessing, using, and managing data.
• Actively curate research data deposited to the CU Scholar repository in accordance with FAIR data principles, and assist with submission of data to disciplinary repositories.
• Collaborate with CRDDS colleagues to identify funding opportunities, prepare grant proposals, and implement funded awards supporting programmatic needs.
• Monitor ongoing developments and trends in data services, and disseminate relevant information to appropriate library and campus audiences via a variety of channels and formats.
• Engage with groups and initiatives at the library, campus, and national/international levels, particularly those related to data services.
• Work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented project development environment.
• Participate in the collegial environment of the Center and perform duties as assigned.

What We Can Offer

The successful candidate will be appointed as full-time (12 month) teaching-professor-track faculty member at the Teaching Assistant Professor rank. The salary range is $67,000-$71,000. Relocation assistance is available for those who qualify.

What We Require

• Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent, or a relevant combination of professional library experience and terminal degree(s) in a related field(s).
• Ability to advocate for, participate in, and cultivate environments that support diversity, respect, and inclusion.

• Excellent analytical, organizational, problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.

What You Will Need

• Experience engaging in collaborative projects or programs.
• Experience and/or coursework involving use, analysis, and management of quantitative data.
• Familiarity with one or more programming languages or statistical packages (e.g., Python, R, SPSS, SAS, etc.).

What We Would Like You To Have

• One year or more of relevant experience in an academic or research library.
• Demonstrated experience developing and/or implementing policies, procedures, or best practices for data management or curation.
• Experience providing outreach, consultation, and instruction at the university level.
