The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is looking for a part-time instructor to be section instructor for COM 643 Diversity, Inclusion and Leadership (3 credits) for the October 2022 session (9/28/22-12/20/22)
Synchronous sessions will meet on Mondays 9:00-10:45pm EST (10/10-12/19)
Course description: This course provides students with the tools to analytically and critically examine the forces which make the pursuit of diversity and inclusion more difficult, and to design strategies to be more effective at inclusion in organizations.
Students will learn the implications of gender and racial prejudice and discrimination, privilege, and stereotypes. They will learn how these forces manifest themselves in media content and organization and will consider the challenges of and opportunities for furthering inclusion as a remedy to the damage some of these forces inflict on workplaces. This course deals with issues that are at once large, sweeping, and very personal. Students will be encouraged to be active contributors in discussions. It is the hope that they will express themselves as contributors to their community/workplace/society from the point of view of their own cultures and identities. Students will be challenged to think of issues from various perspectives, some that they may not have previously considered or dismissed out of hand. Through this course, students will be called upon to leave any racial/ethnic/class, gender, and sexual-orientation-based comfort zone behind. The opportunity to learn about life from people who do not share students’ identities will be presented; there may be times when students may not like everything they hear. At the very least, it is the hope that through this course, they will become more prepared to learn from and contribute to an ever-more diverse society. Qualifications

meet.

- Master’s or Doctoral degree preferred. Significant teaching and/or professional experience in the field.
- Experience teaching diversity topics preferred, but not required.
- View the asynchronous content in advance of each weekly live session.
- Conduct discussions for each week’s live session based on
direction from the
coordinator of COM 643. Be available to meet for these discussions on the online
platform provided. Follow guidance of coordinator on topics related to the
asynchronous material, student questions and progress, assignments and exams,
and the introduction of timely topical news and information that may apply to course
concepts, relevant case studies and articles. - Additional responsibilities include:
• Meet all designated class periods.
• Maintain regularly scheduled office hours.
• Grade any assignments and exams in a timely manner based on
instructions/rubrics provided.
• Submit completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to
University regulations.
• Attend immersion sessions, if invited, when offered.
• Ability to instruct the class on the online platform on the days it is designated to
