The Success Coach is responsible for initiating proactive interventions with all main campus undergraduate students. These positions will assist in increasing graduation rates and retention while decreasing the time to degree for Utica College students. Each Success Coach will oversee a caseload of approximately 300 – 400 students and will meet with each student at least once each semester specifically to create a course schedule. It is expected that students will also meet with their Success Coach several other times pertaining to other issues (transition, academic, etc.). In addition, all Success Coaches will serve as an instructor for a UCC 101- First Year Seminar. Success Coaches will be assigned based on academic school within the College and will be integrated into the school/major areas of responsibility by attending school-sponsored events and through various interactions and partnerships with faculty.

Outreach to students:

  • Completes ongoing assessments of all students in areas of academic/transition needs.
  • Generates referrals to appropriate areas of College as needed.
  • Serves an instructor for UCC 101- First Year Seminar.
  • Becomes familiar with academic requirements and resources of Utica College.
  • Develops/utilizes tracking and reporting systems for students and trends in success-related issues.
  • Serves as an Academic Mentor for students in Pioneer Scholars and the Student Academic Success Program
  • Assists students with basic academic coaching needs such as time management, organization, study skills, and test taking strategies
  • Responds and manages all student academic alerts and concerns.

Information/Communication/Tracking:

  • Works to ensure students are on track for the Four Year Guarantee; this includes keeping up to date records, notes, and coordinating communication between the student Faculty Advisor and Success Coach.
  • Updates student case notes in EAB Navigate in a timely manner.
  • Attends weekly meetings with the Center for Student Success.
  • Attends Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management all-staff meetings as required.
  • Attends school or department meetings as necessary to keep up-to-date on academic programs; alumni relations; faculty research; and to ensure faculty and student interaction
  • Ensures that faculty advisor is appraised of all feedback regarding academic progress
  • Serves as first point of contact for students for all student success related matters
  • Ensures that students who have the credits to graduate have completed all forms pertaining to graduation
  • Coordinates with Financial Aid Counselors to ensure billing, TAP requirements (including ETA) are all being followed and moving the student toward successful on-time completion.

Programming:

  • Assists with programming, presentations and events.
  • Takes an active role in the development of the department’s strategic and operational plans as required by department leadership.
  • Works closely with the department supervisor to develop and implement operational goals that support departmental success.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s preferred.
  • Prior experience working with college students in a residential setting and college programming experience is preferred.
  • Experience dealing with undergraduate students in a peer-to-peer counseling & coaching setting and a professional interest in working with students in a student services and support capacity.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Drive.
  • Must be knowledgeable and up to date on student retention and persistence trends and strategies in higher education.
  • Preferred knowledge of EAB Navigate, Banner, and Argos.
  • High consideration to those who have teaching experience or prior experience in student success.
  • Must be able to attend special events outside of normal office hours. This includes weekends and evenings as needed.
