Position Summary:

The Mechanical Engineering program is looking for a dynamic full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering in the area of instrumentation, automation, and controls with anticipated spring 2023 start date. Position responsibilities include teaching undergraduate engineering courses, research and scholarly activity, and service to the university and department. The Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering department is dedicated to hands-on engineering education focused on interdisciplinary coursework and cross-disciplinary collaborations outside the classroom. We are a strong, student-centered program located in Southwest Wisconsin that prioritizes accessible undergraduate engineering education, effective teaching pedagogy, and dedication to an inclusive learning environment. 

Responsibilities:

The primary duty will be teaching undergraduate courses in the area of instrumentation, automation, and controls within the Mechanical Engineering Program utilizing modern and inclusive pedagogy. Faculty are also expected to participate in curriculum development, academic assessment, undergraduate research and scholarly activities, as well as university/community service. Mechanical engineering faculty also serve as academic advisors and student group advisors in addition to community outreach activities. Faculty are expected to work with colleagues in the department and across campus to improve the diversity of the student body and provide a more inclusive educational experience for all. Additionally, faculty may have the opportunity to teach graduate level courses as part of our online MS Engineering program.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics or related engineering field. PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering or a closely related field, earned by January 15, 2023.
  • Desire and ability to teach mechanical engineering (MECHENG) and general engineering (GENENG) courses.  Special consideration will be given to candidates who specialize in instrumentation, automation, and controls.  Please see the curriculum as listed in the catalog.
  • Ability to engage modern pedagogy to teach undergraduate students through field, classroom, and laboratory settings.
  • Desire to promote diversity, inclusion, and equity, such as engagement in outreach activities, developing inclusive pedagogy, or other targeted activities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Record of professional development, or willingness to develop in the area, related to teaching, research, or scholarly work. Special consideration will be given to candidates who specialize in Industry 4.0, Smart Manufacturing, and/or IIOT.

Mechanical Engineering is the largest of UW-Platteville's ABET-accredited programs and the largest major on campus. It currently has 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 6 instructional academic staff, serves approximately 1,000 majors, and graduates approximately 190 students per year. The main program is housed on the UW-Platteville campus with an additional site at the UW-Oshkosh Fox Cities campus. Courses are also taught via streaming video.

We provide a hands-on, experiential engineering education and our graduates are in high demand throughout Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and beyond. The department has long-standing relations with industrial partners throughout Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois.
