The Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) at St. Olaf College invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position in mathematics with an emphasis in analysis at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2023.

Responsibilities include teaching beginning, intermediate, and advanced undergraduate mathematics courses such as Real Analysis I and II, Complex Analysis, Probability, and Topology; and developing and maintaining an active research program that also contributes meaningfully to the department’s strong commitment to undergraduate research supervision.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in mathematics is strongly preferred by the date of appointment. Applicants should have expertise in mathematical analysis. Applicants must demonstrate potential for successful teaching in an undergraduate setting; those applicants who have had full responsibility for teaching courses will be given higher consideration.

Diversity

At St. Olaf, we are committed to equity and inclusion. We strive to be a campus of welcome where students, faculty, and staff thrive by bringing their full humanity—gender identity, sexuality, race, ethnicity, national origin, socioeconomic class, disability, religion, spirituality, and age—to the Hill each day. Our goal is to generate conversations and processes that over time create greater clarity, transparency, trust, cooperation, consensus, respect, and measurable outcomes. Practices that support this goal include listening, cultivating a growth mindset, respecting those with different views, being informed by data, and understanding that the work is ongoing, collaborative, organic, and ever evolving.

We encourage applicants to familiarize themselves with our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan to learn more about our commitment and to identify how you might contribute to these efforts. Please use the required diversity statement to describe how you would contribute to the development of a diverse and inclusive learning community at our college through your teaching, research, and/or service. Include examples of your contributions when possible.

About the Department

The mathematics program at St. Olaf College is among the largest and most successful in American undergraduate institutions. Graduating annually about 75 mathematics majors, 35 statistics and data science concentrators, and 40 computer science majors, St. Olaf is among the nation’s top undergraduate origins of PhDs in the mathematical sciences. Serving mathematics majors with a wide range of interests, we regularly offer such advanced courses as complex analysis, topology, measure theory, partial differential equations, mathematical biology, and a variety of seminars in pure and applied mathematics. In a typical summer, 10–15 students conduct supported summer research with department faculty. The department has nearly 20 faculty members with expertise in algebraic topology, complex analysis, graph theory, group theory, logic, mathematics education, mathematical physics, operations research, partition theory, real analysis, logic programming, reliable real-time systems, computer graphics, statistics, and biostatistics.

Our department is proud to be the home of outstanding programs in mathematics, statistics and data science, computer science, and mathematical biology. While maintaining disciplinary rigor, we seek interactions and synergy among the programs. The Center for Interdisciplinary Research is a nationally recognized program that pairs faculty and students in MSCS with faculty and students from other disciplines “to share in the excitement and challenge of working across the traditional academic boundaries to collaborate on research.” Opportunities abound for collaborative research, especially involving undergraduates. 6. Statement of your research program, written for a general mathematical audience
  7. Short statement (1 page) on your ideas for supervising undergraduate research
  8. Three letters of reference (at least two must directly address teaching)

Review of applications will begin on October 14, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. Applications received by that date will receive fullest consideration. Finalist interviews are expected in December, 2022.
