(Job #517532) Sergeant, $6,008-$9,275 monthly. Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range. This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt, 12-month pay plan, permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the University Police Department. Sergeants may routinely work evening, night and weekend shifts, and all Sergeants can be required to work mandatory overtime assignments, to attend off-site training and to provide mutual aid to other agencies or locations, based on the needs of the department, and with little or no notice.

Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods). Position Summary:

Under the direction of a commanding officer, the Sergeant is assigned primary responsibility as a working, first line supervisor, in addition to general law enforcement and specialized work assignments performed by Police Officers and Corporals. Work assignments require the use of independent judgment and the ability to provide leadership to others.

Duties:

Under direction of a commanding officer, the Sergeant coordinates, supervises, motivates, and directs police personnel. The Sergeant serves as the Watch Commander, taking responsibility for the activities of the shift, investigations, and appropriate follow-up. The Sergeant ensures timely preparation and prompt submittal of thorough, accurate reports. The Sergeant provides direction and leadership for other non-sworn personnel. The Sergeant makes daily operational and safety decisions, following law and policy, minimizing risk and liability. The Sergeant must be a proficient leader, and often serves as the in-field Incident Commander for campus events, crimes, emergency situations, and disasters. The Sergeant helps develop and implement policies and procedures, provides field training for new personnel, on-the-job training to all personnel, and development/evaluation of assigned staff. The Sergeant responds to low-level performance problems and personnel issues, and carries out internal investigations as assigned. The Sergeant positively reflects and conveys the Department Mission and the objectives of management, and may be assigned to assume the role of Acting Lieutenant or Acting Chief in the absence of those personnel. The Sergeant may be given specialized tasks, training responsibilities, or other duties. Also, the Sergeant must routinely carry out the general law enforcement, proactive patrol, investigative, event management, and community policing duties of a University police officer.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Applicant must have sound knowledge of: pertinent sections of the Constitution and state laws; current rulings related to use of force, prisoner handling; search and seizure; interviews and interrogations; liability/risk management; current law enforcement procedures and methods; patrol techniques; investigative procedures; handling of serious/violent crimes; management of critical incidents; and emergency/disaster response using NIMS, SEMS, and ICS. Applicant must have knowledge of the role of law enforcement on a university campus and the ability to: learn, remember, and follow policies and procedures; to work tactfully and effectively with a diverse community, demonstrating tolerance and respect; communicate clearly and courteously; accurately analyze situations, develop and evaluate courses of action, make sound judgments, and initiate reasonable actions; use correct spelling and grammar; prepare professional, organized reports, memos, and other documents using a computerized word processor; critically review and evaluate written documents, and to effectively train/direct subordinates in creating/correcting documents; give and receive routine and complex oral and written instructions; effectively supervise, lead, teach, direct, inform, motivate, praise, counsel, and evaluate subordinates; schedule and coordinate other employees; work with or without direct supervision; handle multiple tasks and priorities, maintain personal organization, and accomplish tasks in a prioritized manner; accept responsibility, direction, and change; work rotating shifts including nights and weekends; and learn, follow, demonstrate, and teach established safety practices.

Applicant must not have been convicted by any state or by the Federal Government of a crime, the punishment for which would have been imprisonment in a state prison or Federal penitentiary.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS: Height and weight proportional, normal hearing, normal color vision correctable to 20/30 with refractive eye surgery or soft contact lenses.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Graduation from a California POST-Certified police academy.

3. Possess a working knowledge of public safety, law enforcement methods, and crime prevention, with three or more years of active law enforcement experience in the field and/or in corrections.

4. Possess a valid California Driver License with a safe, prudent driving record.

5. Be lawfully authorized to carry a firearm.

6. Be capable of performing all essential functions of this position.

7. Successful completion of a POST Supervisory Course prior to, or within one year following appointment.



Preferred Qualifications: Recent experience as a police trainer or supervisor; knowledge and skills in Community Policing; Emergency Management training and experience; Bachelor's Degree in related field; possession of related POST certificates (e.g., Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Supervisory). Successful completion of a California POST-certified Supervisory Course is desirable, or must be completed within one year of appointment. Bilingual skills desirable, but not required.
