Context of the Job:

Under the direction of the Director, Computing Operations, the Sr. Systems Administrator provides exceptional technical support for the computing and networking operations of the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL). The operation encompasses supporting research and administrative systems and ensuring the uptime and security of these systems is maximized. This operation is critical to the success of NIIMBL's mission.

NIIMBL is a member of the Manufacturing USA network of institutes funded by the federal government to advance United States' competitiveness in advanced manufacturing innovation. The Institute is established by a cooperative agreement with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a public/private consortium of a diverse set of member organizations, including industry, academia, non-profit organizations, state governments, and federal agencies. Institutionally, NIIMBL reports to the Vice President for Research, Scholarship & Innovation.

Major Responsibilities:
  • In collaboration with the Director, architect technology solutions as required by projects, and drive projects to completion within needed timelines.
  • Develop platform to evaluate system performance consistently, and assess and monitor health, capacity, and availability of NIIMBL server equipment.
  • Serve as a senior resource for users and external members, evaluating current technologies and investigating new technologies to make recommendations on enhancements to existing services and protocols, identifying and implementing changes in processes to maintain system efficiency, and troubleshoot problems and offer solutions resulting in minimal service interruptions.
  • Implement policies and procedures as well as follow and enforce best practices for all aspects of NIIMBL technical operations that rely on IT server administration.
  • Configure, implement, maintain, and manage virtual server infrastructure (VMware ESXi virtual machine server farm with more than 10 host servers)
  • Oversee and manage security access to our various servers via firewall configuration, user rights management, and industry-standard hardening of systems.
  • Monitor systems, applications, and user accounts watching for emergency situations prompting immediate action (i.e., zero-day exploits, rampant malware activity, compromised user accounts, etc.)
  • Configure, implement, and maintain physical server hardware.
  • Configure, implement, and maintain Active Directory for NIIMBL's Domain
  • Administer security updates and patches on servers, desktop computers, printers, phones, and all other devices in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Administer Windows and Linux/UNIX servers.
  • Engage with Central IT in delivery of security initiatives, including the University Data Governance and Security Program, NIST SP 500-53 rev 4, and FedRAMP.
  • Develop, test, and implement disaster recovery plans.
  • Develop project plans, including cost estimates as applicable, for aspects of inventory management, server, and systems administration, and make recommendations as needed.
  • Audit network and systems to ensure they are up to necessary specifications.
  • Analyze and develop changes as needed for the systems and the network.
  • Support research facilities in NIIMBL-related buildings.
  • Assists users with hardware and software applications and computer operations.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and 7 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of security best practices required
  • Experience with Windows Server required.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix systems required.
  • Experience in Workgroups, Domain, and Active Directory required.
  • Must be a proactive, independent worker with good communication skills necessary to interact with a non-technical audience.
  • Must have organizational skills to handle competing, ever-changing priorities.
  • Project Management skills with the ability to prioritize, plan, and organize a work process, as well as the ability to analyze and solve problems and make administrative/procedural judgments.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Occasionally required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials when entering laboratory spaces.
  • Ability to lift and move, with or without assistance, computer equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, dexterity to set up, operate, and troubleshoot computers and associated peripherals.
  • Use of personal transportation may be required to assist staff working remotely within tri-state area
  • Availability outside work hours may be needed in case of data center emergencies
