POSITION DESCRIPTION: Human Development and Family Sciences in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Delaware invites applications for a continuing-track Assistant Professor in Early Childhood Education (ECE) to begin Fall 2022. We seek an energetic, highly-motivated, and experienced professional who will serve as a role model and mentor for undergraduate and graduate Early Childhood Education students. As a continuing-track faculty member, the successful candidate will primarily teach undergraduate and graduate level courses, engage in leadership and administrative responsibilities in the department, and be eligible for promotion. Qualified candidates should be interested in establishing a long-term career at the University of Delaware. This is a continuing, 9-month full-time appointment beginning September 1, 2022.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in ECE in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences, and will be able to teach a variety of ECE foundational courses in the major such as child development, ECE curriculum, instruction, assessment courses, and disabilities courses. The applicant will be a contributing member of the department, the ECE committee, and will engage in relevant administrative and leadership duties while supporting the department's ECE scholarship mission.
QUALIFICATIONS: A doctorate in early childhood education, early childhood special education, or related field is required. Teaching certification in Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education and a minimum of three years of successful teaching experience at the early childhood level (birth through 8 years) preferred. Teaching experience in higher education, knowledge of educator development, and teacher education program accreditation processes is desired. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice through teaching, research, and/or public engagement. Ability to work with diverse populations and excellent communication and interpersonal skills essential. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND FAMILY SCIENCES: The Department of Human Development and Family Sciences has 21 full-time faculty, and houses nearly 500 undergraduate majors and minors, and graduate programs at both the master's and doctoral level. HDFS is an innovative, interdisciplinary department that focuses on the study of critical social issues affecting individuals, families, and communities, along with poverty, at-risk families, and disabilities, as well as early childhood education, educator preparation and professional development, and early childhood policy.
The department supports two early childhood majors: the early childhood education major leads to dual certification in early childhood and early childhood special education (birth to age 8), and the human service major with a concentration in early childhood development. HDFS is affiliated with numerous policy and practice-focused early childhood centers that provide a context for data collection, data analysis, and the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, including the Delaware Institute for Excellence in Early Childhood, New Directions Early Head Start, the Lab School, and the Early Learning Center. Other relevant centers in the Department or College include the National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities and the Center for Disabilities Studies.
