CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under limited direction, the Associate Scientist will lead and manage the polymer synthesis and characterization facilities embedded within the Epps (https://sites.udel.edu/eppsgroup) and Korley (https://sites.udel.edu/korleygroup) Research Groups in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Delaware. The Associate Scientist will independently coordinate the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including user training, equipment procurement and maintenance, safety compliance and training, and data management. Additionally, the Associate Scientist will provide high-level intellectual contributions in experimental design, engage in collaborative research projects (internal and external), and mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversees the daily operations of the polymer synthesis and characterization facilities providing high-quality access for internal and external users.
  • Directs projects or manages specialized segments of highly technical or complex studies.
  • Collaborates with principal investigators and users on design, analysis, application, and reporting of research projects.
  • Operates and maintains polymer synthesis and characterization facilities.
  • Trains new laboratory users and develops training protocols such as user manuals, videos, and hands-on training modules.
  • Ensures lab members have up-to-date safety training and assists with on-boarding procedures for incoming laboratory members.
  • Assists in the preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, proposals, and invention disclosures/patent applications.
  • Manages laboratory interactions with University facilities groups, Environmental Health and Safety, and departmental staff.
  • Monitors laboratory data repository to ensure all members' data are properly maintained and regularly backed up.
  • Conducts scientific outreach to build and maintain a vibrant, broad user-base.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS:
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field with three years of job-related experience in a scientific research laboratory preferred.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and rapidly changing technical environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team.
  • Effective organizational and strategic planning skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively disseminate key scientific results and conclusions.
  • Experience with polymer and/or small-molecule synthesis.
  • Experience with techniques such as DSC, TGA, GPC, NMR, GC-MS, and IR spectroscopy, preferred. Additional familiarity with DMA, rheometer, and tensile testers preferred.
  • Ability to adhere to, communicate, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments, to analyze and solve problems, and to prioritize, plan, and organize work.
  • High level of competency with calendaring, collaboration, and communication tools (e.g., Google Suite, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Experience with social media and website maintenance preferred.
