Department Summary
The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health at the University of Oregon is a new Portland-based institute that will provide a bold new approach to addressing the behavioral and mental health care needs of Oregon's children. The Ballmer Institute was made possible by a lead gift of more than $425 million from Connie and Steve Ballmer, co-founders of Ballmer Group Philanthropy.

The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health will be the first of its kind, establishing a new model for behavioral and mental health care, and will be the most comprehensive effort undertaken by a U.S. university and its partners, creating a new model of care.

The Ballmer Institute will:
  • Develop a new level of behavioral health practitioners through new undergraduate degree and certificate programs. The new degree program is subject to state approval.
  • Deliver science-based early detection, prevention, and treatment strategies directly into the lives of children and their families.
  • Accelerate the discovery and dissemination of new technologies and research informed by clinical context.
  • Provide scholarships through a $100 million endowment to graduate a new, diverse, and culturally rich workforce prepared to work directly with those in need.
    Position Summary
    The Strategic Communications Manager (SCM) for The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health provides proactive communications creation, support, and counsel to leadership and faculty and coordinates with academic units within the Ballmer Institute on top-line marketing and branding.The SCM works closely with the Executive Director, the Associate Director, and the development lead on communicating the mission, vision, goals, and successes of the Ballmer Institute to a diverse audience, both internal and external, via written and visual content.

    The SCM will develop and implement an annual strategic communications plan that ensures deliberate, creative, proactive, and cohesive messaging in support of Ballmer Institute initiatives and priorities.

    In addition, the SCM oversees marketing and communications efforts for the Ballmer Institute, broad branding and messaging for academic programs, as well as development, innovation, and research efforts within the Ballmer Institute. The SCM leads strategic efforts to promote the Ballmer Institute academic programs and research across owned, earned, social, and paid media. This includes oversight and management of the Ballmer Institute website and digital presence. The SCM leverages central campus resources and expertise to promote awareness and understanding of Ballmer Institute priorities and initiatives.

    Key audiences are prospective students and faculty, decision-makers, donors, industry partners, peers, media, external and internal advisory boards, and internal faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders. The SCM coordinates with relevant campus colleagues who manage relationships with these audiences.

    The SCM proactively handles required tasks, works independently, shows consistently sound judgment, and has a demonstrated ability to manage, understand, and communicate complex issues and institutional affairs to multiple audiences and through a variety of media. The SCM will regularly interact with administrative leadership and staff, other communication professionals, faculty, students, and external stakeholders. The position may occasionally require working in the evening or on weekends in support of Ballmer Institute activities.

    The position is supervised by the Ballmer Institute Executive Director. This position may supervise other communications professionals and students as the Ballmer Institute scales its operations.

    Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years of experience in communications, public relations, or public affairs.

    An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
    Professional Competencies
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing and copyediting in short format.
  • Ability to assimilate complex information, translate research concepts, and develop content for a variety of audiences, media, and contexts.
  • Mastery of digital communications, including website, photo editing, content management systems, and PowerPoint.
  • Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and equity through communications and within the workplace.
  • Ability to work independently, set appropriate work priorities, and require minimal supervision over regular work activities.
  • Ability to work well and collaborate in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to provide communications counsel and support for an executive or institutional leader.
  • Ability to adapt tone and voice to reach intended audiences.
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in creating and managing communications plans and strategies.
  • Experience in a higher education setting, preferably in a role communicating research or pedagogically-rich content for diverse audiences.
  • Graduate degree in a behavioral health field (e.g., psychology, counseling, nursing, social work) or certificate in science/technical communications.
