Job Description

The Manager, Community Relations is a critical and visible position creating and providing numerous opportunities for student employer engagement including the anticipated 5 or 6 Career Expos/Fairs/Mixers annually that are both in person and virtual. The position will also be responsible for on and off campus recruitment of employers for career employment as well as internships. The position requires advanced knowledge of concepts and practices of employer recruitment and relationship development as well as other segments of student career development and student employment. The manager will also be responsible for supervising the internship coordinator, interns and/or graduate assistants, and the point of contact for employers using our Career Management System, Handshake. The position requires a high level of independent work, identification of problems, and latitude in improving processes and finding solutions.

Job Duties

Employer Engagement - 40%
  • Oversee NAU's on-campus recruitment program, serving as primary point of contact for employers/internship providers of all sizes in Flagstaff, the state of Arizona, and beyond.
  • Proactively develop relationships with employers/internship providers seeking to hire NAU students of all majors, employers opening new offices in the State of Arizona, and other potential “high value” employers/internship providers.
  • Determine employer needs and promote NAU students, utilizing familiarity with NAU's academic programs; make referrals to other career development offices or academic departments when needed.
  • Coordinate employer engagement efforts NAU-wide, including interfacing with, but not limited to, the W. A. Franke College of Business, the College of the Environment, Forestry, and Natural Sciences, the College of Engineering, Informatics, and Applied Sciences, and the Professional Education Program.
  • Promote registering for and create sponsorship opportunities for the Career and Graduate School Expo, Handshake, etc. with employers, generating revenue for NAU.
  • Increase quantity and quality of employers/internship providers on campus through proactively developing and leveraging relationships with faculty, staff, alumni, parents and families, and others.

Event Management - 20%
  • Lead, manage, and partner with campus stakeholders the planning, organization, and implementation of recruiting events for students and alumni to include career expos/fairs, graduate expos, internship fairs information sessions, and others.
  • Oversee, plan, and execute small to large events up to 2000 individuals, including the oversight of 25+ professional staff and student volunteers.
  • In coordination with the Community Program Coordinator, promote events to students, employers, and stakeholders using creative strategies that match student interests to events.
  • Formulate the Career and Graduate School Expo budget, track expenditures, and determine distribution of revenue in partnership with Career Development Director, Students Affairs Business Office, and partner departments and/or colleges.
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Student Employment with in-person and virtual part-time job fairs.

Internship Development, Management, and Promotion - 15%
  • Provide leadership and consultation during the development, management, and promotion of coordinated, interdisciplinary internship/experiential learning programs, including:
  • Arizona State Legislative internships
  • The Washington Center internships
  • Lumberjacks Thrive Externship (in partnership with the Office of Alumni Engagement)
  • Public Lands internships
  • Coconino County internships
  • City of Flagstaff internships
  • Others
  • Serve as back-up point of contact for employers, students, faculty, and staff to navigate NAU's internship/experiential learning system, existing and developing.
  • Maintain knowledge on internship standards and best practices.

  • Business Process Management - 10%
    • Oversee Handshake, NAU's student and alumni job search/career management database, for off-campus employers, to include promoting its features and benefits, liaising with the vendor, working with Handshake to continuously improve functionality/usability, and troubleshooting user issues with off-campus employers.
    • Identify ways to utilize Handshake to automate/improve Employer Engagement business processes (e.g. Career Fairs, On Campus Interviews), creating efficiencies.

    Team Management and Development - 10%
    • Directly supervise the Internship Coordinator, and other employees managing internship programs.
    • Coordinate the activities of graduate assistants, interns, and student employees, review and provide feedback on work products, and provide general mentoring and guidance.
    • Review peers' work products and provide feedback.
    • Achieve goals established by Career Development and Student Affairs; report on progress and recommend changes to program based on assessment results.
    • Maintain current knowledge of career development, employment and recruiting trends, college student development, and other related topics as appropriate.
    • Represent NAU Career Development at NAU, regionally, and beyond at conferences, networking events, and other professional development events.

    Career Advising and Education - 5%
    • Conduct workshops of varying sizes (up to 100 students) on a variety of topics including resumes/cover letters, interview skills, and job search strategies.
    • Advise individual students in 1on1 meetings on resume/cover letter development, interview skills, and job search strategies.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment.
    • 2+ years of relevant experience.
    • 1+ years of management or supervisory experience.
    • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's degree in related field (Students Affairs, Business, Organizational Leadership, Human Resources, Education, or other related field).
    • 2+ years experience working in a university, industry, or educational setting.
    • 2+ years experience facilitating events in an education, non-profit, or corporate environment.
    • 2+ years program development and implementation in a higher education, non-profit, or corporate environment.
    • Experience developing and nurturing stakeholder relationships both internally and externally for a large, diverse organization.
    • Proficiency in Handshake, Career Management System.

    Background Information

    This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing.     Salary

    Salary range begins at $62,996. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

    FLSA Status

    This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

    Benefits

    This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
