Essential Functions:

The ideal candidate will share Reedley College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2020-2021 Academic Year, we currently enroll over 10,100 students in which 73% identify as Latinx, 5% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 2% as Black/African American, 16% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 2% as multiracial. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.

Reporting to the Dean of Student Services, the counselor will cover a full range of general counseling responsibilities including academic, career and personal counseling with individual and groups, study skills, transfer preparation, or group dynamics which include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Multi-media classroom presentations and advising, large group presentations;
  • Implement retention strategies;
  • Integrate technology into counseling functions, working with students and faculty members and other counselors;
  • Participate in the implementation of student success strategies;
  • Involvement in committee work and strategic planning efforts;
  • Implementation of student learning outcomes;
  • Perform other established duties and responsibilities of counselors.
  • Assist with implementation of field trips/college tours and work with coordinator on educational and social/cultural enrichment activities;
  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Services;
  • Assist the Project Director and Counselor/Coordinator;
  • Provide counseling services as needed including extended day, evening, and Saturday hours and assignments at on and off-site locations;
  • Assist with coordination of college and program enrichment activities including workshops and cultural trips for program participants;
  • Support implementation of in-person and/or virtual campus tours to four-year institutions of higher education for interested program participants;
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection and enrollment program participants, preparation and completion of program reports and events;
  • Foster the identification, recruitment and selection of the specified number of eligible students per the requirements of Student Support Services (SSS) & STEM;
  • Provide comprehensive counseling services to TRIO students, including academic, career, personal and life transitions counseling;
  • Assist in the organization and implementation of matriculation activities, such as orientation, counseling and follow-up services to students;
  • Assist students with major selection, career development planning, and goal identification;
  • Maintain close working relationships with faculty, feeder high schools, community and other student services support programs;
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the Guided Pathways, Student Equity Achievement (SEA), and other student success initiatives;
  • Lead and collaborate in developing programs and student support services with an emphasis reducing achievement gaps for our under-served and minoritized students;
  • Work collaboratively with instructional faculty, staff, and administrators in the development of student success initiatives and provisions of counseling services;
  • Utilize technology to track student progress, implement efficient support services, provide counseling services, and make presentations in classrooms and other group settings;
  • Review data on student success and achievement and use the information to adjust student support services;
  • Provide intentional case-management services to assigned students and provide follow up services including Early Alert responses and resource referrals;
  • Assist, as needed, with articulation, student outreach, and recruitment activities;
  • Provide assistance and referrals to on/off campus resources and student support services including Admissions & Records, CalWORKs, Career/Transfer &Employment Center, DSP&S, Financial Aid, Academic Success Centers, EOPS, and off-campus community resources;
  • Participate in meetings, conferences, trainings, and other professional development activities to maintain the expertise required to provide accurate and reliable information and support to students seeking to complete a certificate, associate degree, or transfer;
  • Monitor and implement programs in compliance with federal, state, district, and college regulations, policies, and procedures;
  • Develop and/or revise curriculum and programs, including program review and student learning outcomes for courses and programs to improve student learning;
  • Participate in the accreditation process;
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participate in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.


Minimum Qualifications:
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice; AND

  • Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;OR

  • the equivalent.



NOTES:
A bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including disabled students;
  • Extensive counseling experience in a community college and/or TRiO program;
  • Knowledge of issues affecting the potential of low-income and/or potential first generation college bound students in grant funded programs;
  • Proven sensitivity to students from diverse educational and economic backgrounds;
  • Experience developing Student Educational Plans (SEPs);
  • General understanding of Financial Aid Programs including applications and eligibility;
  • Knowledge of California Community Colleges matriculation processes;
  • Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students;
  • Experience in using and interpreting a variety of career assessment tools;
  • Experience working with high school partners;
  • Experience in conducting workshops and teaching courses in career and personal development;
  • Experience implementing retention strategies;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.


Conditions of Employment:
177 - 181 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:
Annual starting salary range is $60,678 - $93,414 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,270 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

Reedley College is located in the central San Joaquin Valley of California in the city of Reedley, which has a population of approximately 25,000. Known as “The World’s Fruit Basket,” Reedley is in one of the richest agricultural regions of the world. Reedley College was established in May 1926 as Reedley Junior College and has affected many lives since then. In its 95 years, Reedley College has developed into a crucial component of higher education in the central San Joaquin Valley, offering over 153 degrees and certificates in 37 areas of study taught by approximately 140 full-time faculty and 225 part-time faculty.
