Johns Hopkins University Press seeks a Program Manager who will be responsible for managing multiple projects at Hopkins Press through July 2026. The Program Manager will work closely with the JHU Institutional History Project’s Lead Author, who is a Senior Historian, and a Research Historian to ensure that the project is adequately planned and meets milestones and deadlines.

Collaborating with a Senior Historian and Research Historian, this person will provide overall management for an extensive project to research, write, and publish an academically rigorous, comprehensive history of Johns Hopkins University that will span the founding of the university in 1876 through recent times and be completed by early 2026. It is estimated that this project will occupy 60% of the full-time position for the first year of the project and 30% time annually for the balance of the project. The balance of this full-time position will be spent managing other programs and projects at Hopkins Press that could range from open access to innovation planning to information technology.

This person will also lead event planning and be responsible for all logistics involved in recruiting historians to serve in an advisory capacity and any formal meetings of groups or committees. Using project management software, the Program Manager will ensure that all collaborators have available a dashboard for monitoring their progress and will lead periodic update meetings. The other programs for which this person is responsible will require similar responsibilities and requirements. This position reports to the Executive Director of Johns Hopkins University Press.

This position is seeking the right candidate who has demonstrated experience managing numerous complex projects.

This position must be worked from within the U.S. and within commutable distance to Baltimore, MD.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

For the History Project:

  • Provide program management for the JHU institutional history project including project tracking, creating milestones, assigning tasks, reporting, and follow-up.
  • Collaborate with the senior historian, research historian, and others in creating advisory committee(s) for providing feedback on the JHU history project.
  • Monitor resource needs and makes recommendations for adjustments to those resources; implement agreed-upon solutions, which may include hiring researchers and other labor to ensure the project runs on time.
  • Oversee efforts to bring historians together for providing advice whether in person or virtually, including event planning, acquiring transcription services, and providing information to team members in a usable format.
  • Manage budget in collaboration with the Press’s CFO and the funding offices.
  • Provide team members with logistical support including coordinating with facilities management for transport of books and other documents, scheduling meetings on behalf of team members, drafting agendas, attending all meetings, and providing notetaking function.
  • Develop executive briefings and formal reports for Press and University leadership.
  • Prepare communications about the project as needed including written announcements and invitations to participate in advisory committees. May include developing a website in collaboration with internal or external web developers.

For Other Projects:

  • Provide overall program/project management including setting goals, creating workplans, project tracking, creating milestones, assigning tasks, reporting, and follow-up.
  • Manage program budgets in collaboration with the CFO and business leaders.
  • Work with business leadership, develop project proposals including preparation of budgets and managing proposals through the university’s systems.
  • Monitor resource needs and make recommendations for adjustments to those resources; implement agreed-upon solutions including hiring researchers and other labor to ensure the project runs on time.
  • For IT projects, collect requirements in collaboration with IT staff and build project plans and tracking mechanisms.
  • Weave diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion into all aspects of the work.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing numerous complex projects.

* 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
