The School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering (MIME) at Oregon State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in mechanical engineering with research expertise in computational multi-scale and multi-physics modeling, simulation, and analysis in the area of advanced manufacturing. The school is particularly interested in candidates whose research connects the material design phase with manufacturing through multi-scale and multi-physics modeling of process–structure–property relationships. Candidates with industry or national lab experience are encouraged to apply. Applicants must hold a doctorate in a relevant field.

This position advances the university’s strategic investments in computing capabilities associated with a new supercomputer to be installed in the planned Collaborative Innovation Complex. Other computing facilities available to support the successful candidates include the high-performance computing (HPC) cluster, the Center for Quantitative Life Sciences, and the Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing.

The successful candidate will be expected to initiate new externally funded research as well as expand, complement, and collaborate with existing research programs in the School, College of Engineering, and beyond. Complementarity with the College of Engineering’s signature research areas of artificial intelligence, materials science, robotics, or advanced manufacturing is preferred. The successful candidate will conduct original research, build relationships with industry partners, advise graduate students, teach undergraduate and graduate level courses, and perform service at the School, College, and University levels.

Oregon State University is located in Corvallis, OR with approximately 27,000 students enrolled. The College of Engineering is the largest college with approximately 9,000 students. Within the School of MIME, there are over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students. OSU is situated on a beautiful 400-acre campus. OSU is located about 90 miles south of Portland, a major urban area with an international airport and thriving industry, and about 40 miles from the state capitol in Salem, in the city of Corvallis. Corvallis sits in the middle of Oregon’s finest recreational and scenic areas: ocean beaches, lakes, rivers, forests, high desert, and the rugged Cascade and coast mountain ranges are all within a short driving distance. Corvallis is a community of 55,000 people in the Willamette Valley between Portland and Eugene and is an idyllic college town. It has been rated one of America’s most livable small cities for its classic structures, tree-lined streets, and Willamette River frontage.

The College of Engineering is the largest college at OSU, with approximately 9,000 students. The School of MIME offers undergraduate degree programs in mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, and energy systems engineering and graduate programs in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, materials science, and robotics. Position Duties   

50% Teaching and related duties: Teaching of undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and/or Materials Science.

40% Research and scholarly activities: Research, scholarship, mentoring students, and management of multidisciplinary research programs.

10% Service: Service to the School, College, University, or Profession.

Minimum/Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have earned a PhD in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering or other relevant field prior to the position start date.
  • Applicants must have demonstrated ability or significant potential for excellent teaching
  • Applicants must have demonstrated ability or significant potential to lead and collaborate in innovative research and attract external competitive funding to sustain a vigorous research program.
  • Research expertise in computational multi-scale and multi-physics modeling, simulation, and analysis in the area of advanced manufacturing.
  • Proven oral and written communication skills.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion.
  • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral and/or relevant industry experience.
  • Research program in a growth area that is also aligned with the College of Engineering signature areas.
  • Track record of securing external funding for research.
