Essential Functions (Job Duties)

This Assistant Vice President Economic Development/Chief Program Officer TechTown (AVPED/CPO) reports to the Vice President Economic Development & President/CEO Tech Town and is responsible for the design, implementation, management and continuous improvement of the entrepreneurship programs under the purview of the Office of Economic Development and TechTown.

The AVPED/CPO leads high functioning teams to successfully operate each of the programs, assists in crafting the overall economic development strategy for the University and helps manage day-to-day activities for both the Office of Economic Development and TechTown. The teams that report to the AVPED/CPO are Small Business Services, Technology Based Programs, Entrepreneurial Education, Goldman Sachs 10K Small Businesses, and Detroit Revitalization Fellows.


Provide strategic direction for the design and implementation of entrepreneurship programs, training, and events.

Create, motivate and lead high-performing, professional teams to deliver excellent client service. Oversee unit staff and management hiring, performance management and development.

Craft department and entrepreneurship strategic plans in partnership with internal and/or external stakeholders.

Oversee the development and implementation of relevant program metrics and other evaluation tools. Identify and initiate refinement opportunities.

Develop and adhere to program and department budgets in collaboration with funders, finance, HR and individual program leads.

Serve as a strategic resource, reporting to and/or serving on several governance and advisory boards.

Establish and maintain impactful relationships with funders, community partners, and other external stakeholders that promote and benefit entrepreneurship programs.

Unique Duties


Bachelor's degree in business, management or related field from an accredited college or university.

Minimum ten years in progressively responsible leadership roles, focused on innovation and/or entrepreneurship organizations. Experience in managing an entrepreneurial training programs in the private sector preferred.


Ability to think critically; skilled in project management and planning; advanced communication and collaboration abilities; effective management and leadership skills; self-motivated and the ability to work under pressure in an entrepreneurial environment. Skilled in advocating, managing, and leading change related to program and business opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications
MBA or Master's Degree in management or closely related field preferred.
