The IT Architect is a senior member of the InfoSec team, responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of the University’s data protection strategies, technical and administrative solutions, and compliance requirements. This position is a mix of day-to-day operational duties and project implementation. It is expected that anyone in this position has a breadth of knowledge to handle most Information Security issues, concerns, or directives as they arise.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a related field with 5-7 years of IT security experience and/or general IT experience with a slant towards security.
  • Be able to work independently on small and multi-month efforts while still coordinating decisions with other team members
  • Have good written and oral communication and skills.
  • Be able to work effectively with people processing a wide variety of technical skill; from layperson to expert.
  • Be able to work effectively in the office or remotely.
  • Have excellent troubleshooting skills under pressure.
  • Ability to design systems to fit into a campus environment to support a (wide range of customers and activities)
Job Specific Qualifications
Successful candidates will have knowledge and experience in as many of these Information Security areas as possible:
  • Bridging and routing firewalls (Juniper preferred), managing complex routing and failover mechanisms, designing firewall systems.
  • PKI, including SSH key management and general certificate management.
  • Protocols used for authentication and access control: LDAP (AD and generic), SAML /Shibboleth, RADIUS, 802.1x, AD cloud service protocols.
  • Incident response and forensics.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, PCI - DSS, GLBA, NIST 171 and SP800-53.
  • Familiarity with risk analysis methods.
  • MFA systems, including Microsoft MFA
  • Access/ RBAC mechanisms commonly used in applications.
  • IDS, SIEM and Log correlation systems.
Candidates should also have general experience in the following technical areas:
  • Common networking protocols ( TCP /IP, IPV6, multicast, DNS, DHCP, etc).
  • Mail systems, including Office 365 cloud services.
  • Linux (mostly Ubuntu) and common tools, such as syslog-ng, tcpdump, methods for starting software at boot time.
  • Scripting (Linux shell, Python, PowerShell).
  • SQL database queries.
  • Windows systems.
  • VMWare ESX virtualization.
Responsibilities
  • Assisting the Chief Information Security Officer ( CISO ) and other Sr. Information Security staff with steering the University’s Information Security program and strategies through interdepartmental engagement, project management and implementation, and technical expertise.
  • Monitoring and maintaining the University’s distributed firewall architecture, troubleshooting system level problems, and future proofing our environment.
  • Assist ITS’ Infrastructure team with the management of several backend Linux systems used for firewall management (Juniper), IDS (Security Onion), vulnerability scanning (Nessus and BurpSuite), log correlation and visualization (Elastic).
  • Provide Information Security expertise as a member of an interdepartmental team that evaluates 3rd party agreements and contracts for the University.
  • Assisting in efforts to maintain the University’s compliance with PCI - DSS, HIPAA, GLBA and other external and internal compliance requirements.
