Job Summary

The Controller oversees the accounting operations for the University and will report directly to the Assistant Vice President for Business and Finance ( AVP ). The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day management of activities including accounting, payroll, financial reporting and financial control operations of the University.

Essential Functions
  • Manages day-to-day activities including accounting, payroll, financial reporting and financial control operations.
  • Schedules and supervises the daily activities of accounting personnel and processes.
  • Maintains responsibility for the accurate recording of all financial transactions and maintenance of all accounting records.
  • Manages the month end and year end accounting close process resulting in an accurate and timely close of the financial books each period. Perform reconciliations and ensure all entries are correctly recorded according to proper accounting standards.
  • Supports the AVP with the preparation of financial reports for internal and external distribution, provide financial data from the accounting records, and perform financial and procedural analyses as required.
  • Serve as an operational contact for external auditors and manages all schedules, and analysis towards the successful preparation of the audited financial statements, audited retirement plans, and audited tax returns.
  • Ensure proper internal controls are in place to achieve operational effectiveness and reliability, as well as compliance with applicable laws and regulations, debt covenants, grant and donor requirements.
  • Ensure journal entries are made and accounts are reconciled on a timely basis.
  • Monitor daily cash across managed accounts and provide recommendations regarding the appropriate balance for needed for near term use.
  • Maintains and oversees access to the accounting records and systems in order to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and protect the integrity of financial and accounting information.
  • Be a positive change agent and demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting.
  • 10 plus years in senior staff accountant or accounting management position.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles ( GAAP ) and fund accounting.
  • Ability to lead and management several projects concurrently.
  • Experience managing, developing & fostering collaboration among a team.
  • High level of integrity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency with Colleague a plus.
  • CPA
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
  • Employee is subject to indoor work, protected from weather conditions. Work is sedentary in nature and involves exerting up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently/constantly in order to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move object.
  • Occasional evening and weekend obligations.
