Senior Coordinator, Communications



Summary

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine seeks a full-time Senior Coordinator (Communications) to deliver high-quality communication to internal and external audiences. The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology delivers cutting-edge research focused on cell and developmental biology, cancer, and aging. The department ranks among the top ten nationally in funding from the National Institutes of Health.

This role is based in the Department’s Administration team with close collaboration with the Chair’s Office. The successful candidate will ensure brand-consistent, high-quality communication with faculty, staff, and students as well as funding organizations, news organizations, philanthropic donors, external visitors, and others.

This position may offer the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement.

Job Duties
  • Develops and executes communication projects that promote the department; in general, these include, but are not limited to assisting the Chair and faculty with high quality, clear, and impactful communication, preparing departmental newsletters, website updates, social media content, marketing materials, and newsletters, working in conjunction with the BCM Office of Communications and Community Outreach as necessary.
  • Scientific Writing/Editing:
  • Provides department Chair with support in materials writing and editing as needed.
  • Creates and edits documents related to faculty development.
  • Assists writers to formulate detailed concepts, convey research findings and prepares written interpretations of data and other information for a diverse readership.
  • Assists in the writing of grant reports, and other high-level correspondence.
  • Assists in the design and formatting of visual materials to support written work.
  • Collaborates with faculty to edit and revise manuscripts and grants to optimize clarity and impact
  • Advises faculty on impactful communications strategies
  • Web Presence:
  • Helps faculty with web and social media presence
  • Updates department website following BCM guidelines and brand standards (training provided).
  • Builds new webpages as needed for events and lectures.
  • Creates and maintains department social media accounts.
  • Science Communication:
  • Interacts with faculty to effectively present their work to a broad audience, including scheduling and conducting interviews with faculty and writing & revising lay summaries of faculty research.
  • Acts as liaison between faculty and BCM communications team to ensure faculty achievements are visible on BCM communications channels.
  • Fundraising and Marketing Communications:
  • Helps faculty identify and coordinate appropriate grant funding opportunities.
  • Develops and coordinates philanthropic and volunteer opportunities in conjunction with department leaders.
  • Helps manage donor relations and acts as a liaison between internal and external stakeholders.
  • Event Management:
  • Supports the Wednesday Seminar Series.
  • Creates attractive, compelling & informative flyers for departmental events that conform to department and BCM branding standards.
  • Advertises events through appropriate channels (newsletters, student meetings, listservs, social media, flyers).
  • Coordinates photography (and/or videography) through BCM communications.
  • Provides on site event support to include set up through breakdown (will require occasional after-hours support).
  • Helps organize and oversee faculty and department-wide outings and retreats.
  • Uses BCM internal software to collect, compile & disseminate information for departmental newsletters and reports.
  • Works with departmental staff, faculty, and affiliated BCM centers to maintain faculty and trainee rosters, corresponding listservs, and faculty directory pages.
  • Creates flyers consistent with departmental and BCM brand standards to advertise various lecture series and posts to appropriate social media channels.
  • Conducts research & manages data related to special projects related to communication or operational performance.
  • Compiles reports and recommendation as requested.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Four years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A relevant bachelor's degree may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Experience with the following programs
  • Microsoft Office
  • Zoom
  • Web form and scheduling applications, such as JotForm, Doodle
  • Canva
  • Adobe Pro, Illustrator
  • Social media platforms such as Twitter and TikTok
  • Experience with writing and editing, managing social media, creating web content, ideally in a higher-education setting.
