The Augusta University/University of Georgia (AU/UGA) Medical Partnership, a regional campus of the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University (AU) located in Athens, GA, is seeking an experienced, innovative medical educator in the area of Physiology to teach primarily in our pre-clinical curriculum (Years 1 and 2). Candidates with broad teaching experience in endocrine, renal, cardiopulmonary and muscle physiology are especially encouraged to apply.

Our students study basic and clinical science in a highly integrated, systems-based, hybrid curriculum that incorporates active learning strategies in small and large group settings. We seek an outstanding, team-oriented educator who will share our excitement in contributing to this dynamic and innovative educational program. Preference will be given to candidates who also demonstrate a commitment to educational research or other scholarly endeavors. The AU/UGA Medical Partnership campus offers unique opportunities for medical education research, as well as research in cell and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology and an array of other disciplines through collaboration with faculty in the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Public Health, and other units across the University of Georgia campus in Athens. The successful candidate will have a primary appointment at MCG at Augusta University, with the opportunity for an adjunct faculty appointment in the appropriate department at the University of Georgia.

Background Information: Eleven years ago, Augusta University and the University of Georgia partnered to create a four-year undergraduate medical education campus in Athens, GA in response to a state legislature-sponsored initiative to increase Georgia’s physician workforce needs (Tripp-Umbach, Expanding Medical Education in Georgia, January, 2008). The AU/UGA Medical Partnership has served as an incubator for evidence-based medical education that has successfully combined the significant instructional and research resources of UGA, the state's flagship land-grant research university, with the expertise of MCG at AU, Georgia's only public medical school. Students graduating from our institution have consistently matched in top tier residency programs throughout the United States. The successful candidate will join a cadre of enthusiastic and talented educators who have created a collaborative environment for developing, implementing and teaching basic and clinical sciences.

The Community: Athens is one of the nation’s quintessential college towns. In 2018, Athens was rated #6 in best small places for business and careers, #19 in education, and #31 in job growth. This city of 129,000 people is home to the University of Georgia, one of the nation’s top three producers of Rhodes Scholars over the past two decades. Athens is also known as the birthplace of R.E.M., the B-52’s, and Drive-by Truckers. Culturally, Athens possesses a lively restored Victorian-era downtown bustling with shops, dining, and nightlife. It is located in Northeast Georgia 61 miles from Atlanta and is less than 4 hours away from both mountains and beaches. To learn more about Athens, see http://www.visitathensga.com.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DO, DVM, PharmD or equivalent) and excellent communication skills. For candidates with an MD or DO degree, if additional campus duties require hospital privileges, the following would also be required: board certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (when appropriate), the ability to obtain an unrestricted medical license in the state of Georgia and appropriate hospital credentials, and the ability to obtain an unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration license.

Preference will be given to individuals with prior teaching experience in U.S. medical education programs (a background in case-based and active learning methods in small and large group settings is especially desirable), and to those who will be actively engaged in some form of research or scholarship.  AU/UGA Medical Partnership basic science and clinical science educators work in pairs within our unique curriculum to facilitate case-based small group student learning on a weekly basis.
