Loyola University Chicago School of Law is seeking an experienced tax litigator with a proven track record of success representing clients before the IRS in federal tax controversies to lead the Federal Tax Clinic as a clinical faculty member responsible for providing education, training and supervision to student attorneys in the clinic.

This is an opportunity designed for an attorney with experience as a practitioner in the field of tax law who is passionate about a future in experiential education in a law school clinic setting. The preferred applicant will have experience teaching and administering a Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (“LITC”) grant administered by the IRS . More information about the LITC grant program can be found here. The Loyola Federal Tax Clinic is supported in part by the LITC grant program. Applicants should have knowledge of best practices in clinical pedagogy and the ability to supervise student attorneys to ensure that clients receive high-quality representation and that students learn about the effective, ethical, and reflective practice of law. Supervision includes meeting weekly with students, accompanying students to court, reviewing student work product, and working with students on other activities, including education and outreach initiatives to the larger Chicago community. The Federal Tax Clinic Director also teaches a 2-hour weekly lawyering skills and substantive issue seminar. The Federal Tax Clinic Director is responsible for applying for grants and managing grants, including grant reporting and collaboration with the IRS LITC Program Office.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Teaching, training, development, and supervision of law student attorneys.
  • Supervising the client screening process including students and staff that are assisting in screening cases for tax controversy issues appropriate for representation by the student attorneys in the Clinic.
  • Supervising cases and student attorneys, meeting at least weekly with students, reviewing and providing comments on student work, accompanying them to court, and working on other activities, including education and outreach initiatives.
  • Teaching a weekly seminar to help students synthesize their clinical casework and develop their lawyering skills, ethical awareness, and professionalism.
  • Applying for and managing the LITC grant that includes work in collaboration with the Loyola University Office of Sponsored Programs and the Office of Research Services.
  • Developing and organizing partnerships and community engagement to provide education on tax law, issues, and policy,
  • Participate and collaborate with other clinical faculty members at regular meetings.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Education: Juris Doctor from an ABA -accredited law school.
  • At least three (3) years of experience as a practicing lawyer in matters relating to federal income tax controversy.
  • Tax Court admission.
  • Good standing to practice before the IRS .
  • Admission in good standing to any state’s bar.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Admission to the Illinois bar or willing to seek Illinois bar admission upon hire.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Experience supervising attorneys in a practice setting
  • Fundraising or grant-writing experience.
  • Nonprofit or public interest employment history.
  • Project management experience.
  • Demonstrated skills in organization, leadership, and communication.
  • Strong academic record and/or other indicia of ability to perform at a high level.
  • Commitment to work for low-income clients.
  • Strong interest in teaching.
  • Multi-lingual.
  • Ability to foster relationships and work with diverse groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Creativity and initiative.
