Position Summary

This is a full-time, grant-funded position that entails working with the Bank of America Scholars ( BOAS ) program at MSU Denver’s Health Institute. Health Career Navigators ( HCN ) work with a diverse student population to prepare them for jobs in the Colorado health workforce. These students are seeking a degree in one of our Health Institute departments and receive training in culturally diverse patient-centered care.

The Health Institute of MSU Denver has developed two structured programs: 1. The National Ambassadors Program ( MSU Ambassadors) and 2. An Adult/Non-Traditional Program ( MSU Non-Traditional Program) for veterans and other adult students. The programs will empower diverse undergraduate students who come from underrepresented economic and educational backgrounds to succeed in our pre-health/allied health programs.

The Health Career Navigator reports to the Assistant Director of the Health Institute. This position recruits, advises, provides resources, coordinates service, delivers programming, and coordinates with external partners for students majoring in health fields.

The University is particularly interested in applicants who are bilingual, currently pursuing a Master’s Degree, and who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for underrepresented groups.

Duties/Responsibilities

Student Support Services (40%)
  • Help students develop a plan to enter the workforce through life design advising
  • Coordinate, implement, and provide services to ensure success of students enrolled in BOAS programs
  • Provide case management and develop individualized plans to meet the educational goals of students enrolled in BOAS programs of study
  • Prepare and disseminate information on career opportunities to incoming and current BOAS students
  • Serve as a direct liaison between external partners/organizations, HI staff, and BOAS students
  • Assess students’ interests and abilities and match them with external opportunities, agencies, and mentors
  • Provide resources to students to increase retention and graduation rate
  • Manage and distribute student stipends

Recruitment (20%)
  • Conduct appropriate outreach to recruit students into the BOAS programs
  • Develop relationships and work collaboratively with community colleges to facilitate seamless transfer of students into MSU Denver
  • Coordinate special events and activities for BOAS students and students interested in health-related careers
  • Conduct interviews for BOAS students and students interested in health-related careers
  • On-board and work with BOAS students individually to register them for the necessary BOAS course requirements

Program Development (20%)
  • Develop and manage the BOAS program, including administrative duties as necessary
  • Develop and implement new curriculum for the BOAS program
  • Partner with external health agencies, organizations, and businesses to create a referral system and pipeline for BOAS students
  • Recruit mentors and coordinate with external partners to mentor students
  • Research and provide connections to the needed resources and wrap-around services as defined by individual BOAS student need
  • Coordinate, plan, and implement BOAS events and celebrations such as the End of Year BOAS event

Health Institute Planning and Collaboration (10%)
  • Contribute to curriculum development, management, and delivery for the health institute as a whole. This includes, but it not limited to, Health Equity Lectures, workshops, Friday HCOP seminars, and occasional BOAS Saturday Seminars
  • Help plan and execute orientation for BOAS, HCOP, and DUHOP students
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of Health Institute initiatives, events, activities, and celebrations. This includes, but is not limited to, the Navigate Your Health Career event, the Reimagine Wellness initiative, and HCOP / DUHOP events
  • Collaborate on grants, data, and conference proposals and workshops
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of the Health Institute

Bank of America Grant Oversight, Management, and Supervision (10%)
  • Oversee and manage the BOA grant
  • Administer, collect, and track data from students to meet the requirements of the BOA grant
  • Plan and ensure BOA grant requirements are being met
  • Supervise and manage BOAS grad fellow
  • Supervise and manage four peer leaders
  • Assist on the renewal and written requirements of the BOA Grant
  • Work with the data specialist to compile, organize, and present BOAS student data
  • Minimal budget oversight and management of the BOA grant
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Demonstrated experience working with students in an academic or community-based setting as a recruiter, advisor, case manager, educational counselor, career coach, mentor, or teacher

Successful applicants will ensure their resumes clearly demonstrate that their work experience describes how they meet all required qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual
  • Experience working with diverse populations including non-traditional students, students of color, first generation college students, transfer students, student from rural communities and/or veterans
  • Experience with casework or case management with diverse populations
  • Experience working in a health setting
  • Experience working with external partners and/or health agencies
  • Experience in grant work
  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Academic advising at the college level
  • Experience mentoring high school or college level students
  • Experience using Banner and/or Degree Works
  • Experience developing training or workshop curriculum aimed at student success and retention
  • Experience recruiting mentors and matching mentees to mentors
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects/duties and responsibilities
  • Excellent oral and verbal communication skills
Work Hours

While this position requires the candidate selected for hire to work in person, there may be flexibility of some remote work opportunities and hybrid schedules (subject to supervisor approval).
