Context of the Job:

The Division of Student Life supports all UD students as they develop personally, educationally, and professionally. Under the general direction of the Communications Manager and in close alignment with the Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM), the Communications Specialist I provides design and visual communication expertise for the Division of Student life. A major emphasis is on creating visual and multimedia materials for a wide variety of media outlets for strategic communications initiatives. The Communications Specialist I assists the broader communications and marketing aspects of production design, comprehensive layouts for concept visualization, edits, oversees, and coordinates production of final products. This position will also provide support for the Egg Student Marketing Agency.

Responsibilities:

Design & Multimedia Creation:

• Produces creative collateral that supports the University of Delaware and Division of Student Life goals and maintains branding standards.• Demonstrates fresh design solutions in print, digital, and web media to create targeted communications for the division.• Interacts with various clients to interpret and translate their expressed needs and ideas into effective visual forms tailored to the needs of intended audiences.• Assists with the execution of the visual design and branding strategy.• Collaborates directly with printers to achieve superior results in printed materials; consults with commercial printers regarding format and print processes utilizing preflight and prepress best practices; and assembles final layouts to prepare files for print.• Inspects proofs for accuracy and adherence to appropriate production standards and suggests improvements as needed.• Takes projects from concept to final execution, presenting visual plans and strategies to stakeholders throughout the process.• Plans and executes photography and video projects for the Division of Student Life, coordinating closely with OCM.• Adheres to University Brand Guides as well as policies and procedures governing communications and marketing efforts.• Ensures all digital outreach efforts and products meet University standards for quality and audience comprehension.• Actively participates in client meetings, work sessions, and presentations to move others toward a singular, compelling vision.

Training & Development:

• Assists Communications Manager, Creative & Operations in development of student training. • Manages project tasks as needed for the student creative team.• Guides students through creative workflow while maintaining strategic goals, brand identity, and best practices of the division and University.• Supervises EGG multimedia student intern team.

Portfolio Partnership:

• Supports the work and mission of the Division of Student Life through committees, task forces, and special assignments• Assists with project management and communication with relevant stakeholders within assigned portfolio(s) around communication and marketing requests.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Art and Design, Visual Communications, Graphic Design, Multimedia or related field and a minimum of three years of job-related experience. • Proficiency in the basic design tools, including mastery of Adobe Creative Suite. Deep understanding of emerging design trends and technology platforms that support digital marketing and user experiences, as well as creating print marketing.• Ability to think conceptually and articulate ideas well, develop ideas on a given topic or situation, and develop creative ways to solve a problem.• Experience working in Student Life or Student Affairs marketing, branding, and communications preferred.• Comprehension of brand architecture, brand identity, and brand positioning as it informs creative work. • Excellent project management skills. • Demonstrated ability to execute and distribute projects as part of a predefined marketing plan and communications strategy to a creative team and oversee those projects completion. • Must possess outstanding oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.• Strong understanding of design principles and multimedia skills, including mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud software. Skills in both photography and videography as well as editing abilities preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft or Apple Office tools and database experience required. • Proven ability to work equally well independently and with project teams.• Ability to manage multiple priorities; organizational skills, and attention to detail.• Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.• Committed to fostering a workplace culture of belonging, where diversity is celebrated, and equity is a core value.
