CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

University Media Services (UMS) provides support and services in the following areas: video/audio and digital cinema production, campus and performance events, classroom technology, and media technology. The technology work of this group is highly visible and is crucial to supporting the University's mission. The Video Production group provides multi-camera production in the field and in UMS's video production studio. Productions range from recording lecture presentations to programs requiring full-scale development including script writing, shooting, animation, and editing. The group also provides image magnification services during live events and web casts.

The Video Production Technician II, under limited direction, acts as the videographer and editor for video and digital cinema productions, live event recordings and streaming. The incumbent works directly with the video producers to determine project videography needs, conceives the appropriate video techniques, and edits the finished product. In completing this work, the Video Production Technician II helps coordinate the activities of clients, talent, graphic artists and student production assistants.

The Video Production Technician II reports to the Manager of Video Production.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Records and edits video for University projects and live events.
  • Operates robotic cameras and video switchers for in-person/hybrid events.
  • Organizes and coordinates the details of video production work. Conducts location site surveys and production planning meetings.
  • Helps develop a recording schedule for each specific job. Works on the design and construction of studio sets, and the design and set-up of studio and location lighting.
  • Performs setups and strikes for larger multi-camera productions.
  • Encodes video for web delivery.
  • Ensures video recordings are edited to meet UD branding standards.
  • Assists with general day-to-day video operations.
  • Provides guidance to and assists colleagues in UMS.
  • Researches and develops new techniques for conveying and presenting material within video projects. Evaluates new audio/visual equipment and recommends use. Keeps abreast of new technologies.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate working relationships with colleagues and clients and follows University and department policies and procedures governing IT efforts. Works within the department's overall strategic plan. Meets deadlines and achieves goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Television Production or related field and three years of experience or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Proficiency in video camera operation, video editing with Final Cut Pro and live Web streaming.
  • Proficiency in video production must be demonstrated through a video of sample work.
  • Skills in planning, writing and creative visualization. Hands-on experience in shooting and editing.
  • Must be willing to work individually, as well as part of a production team.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Intermediate knowledge of information technologies including networking, live video streaming, and software.
  • Willing to adapt to changing technology.
  • Knowledge of Wordpress a plus.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to lift and move, with or without assistance, video and audio equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to accurately discern colors and the pitch, tone and volume of sound.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Must be able to work overtime, evenings and occasional weekends to support the demands of various projects and events.
