Position Summary:
The Director, Outdoor and Youth Programs is responsible for the administration, implementation, and promotion of the programs within Recreation and Wellbeing: Outdoor Program, Outdoor Rental Center, Student Recreation Center (SRC) Climbing Center, Vandal Ventures Outdoor Orientation Trips, and Youth Programs. The Director will institute, design, and organize programs and policies that meet the institution's student recreational needs. They are responsible for instructing and leading a wide variety of wilderness outdoor recreational and developmental activities for the university community. The position has oversight for scheduling, publicizing, and coordinating activities for these programs; advising and overseeing the financial aspects of the department including managing budgets and equipment purchases; supervising and guiding 3 professional staff, 2 graduate students and 40-60 student staff responsible for program implementation and supervision in areas of responsibility; collaborating and creating partnerships with the campus community; implementing program wide risk management policies and procedures, directing safety training, maintenance, and inspections of all program facilities and equipment; as well as creating, updating, and maintaining applicable documents.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation, recreation, environmental education, experiential education, natural sciences or a related field. • Five years progressively responsible experience in the administration of outdoor programs, outdoor leadership, university recreation, and/or other adventure programming.
• Experience leading and instructing others in wilderness recreational and educational activities.
• Experience with teaching proficiencies in backpacking, leave no trace, snow sports, glacier travel, avalanche safety, mountain biking, navigation, flatwater and whitewater sports, and climbing.
• Demonstrated capacity to work in outdoor leadership, university environment and/or other adventure programming within the framework of programs and services, policies and procedures, and the overall mission and goals of an educational institution.• Experience training, supervising, developing and coordinating professional and student staff including skill attainment, risk management, conflict resolution and negotiation.• Experience evaluating potentially hazardous situations in remote wilderness environments.
• Experience communicating effectively in writing and other forms of media (multi-media presentations, photography, and video).
• Experience using computer software and applications for word processing, developing spreadsheets, database management and graphic software.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in outdoor recreation, recreation, environmental education, experiential education, natural sciences, or a related field.
• Certification in Swiftwater Rescue Technician, ACA Whitewater Kayak or Raft, Avalanche Educator, and/or Leave No Trace Educator.
• Experience working cooperatively with program staff and participants in stressful situations, with university personnel and the news media.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
• Ability to perform, lead and instruct participants in strenuous wilderness recreational and educational activities.
Required Licensures, Certifications or other
• Must possess valid motor vehicle operator’s license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving University vehicles.
• Certification in Wilderness First Aid and CPR or equivalent or able to acquire within 3 months of hire.
• Willingness to work flexible hours; evenings, weekends and holidays.
