The Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Technologist for the Laboratory of Dr. Payam Mohassel. Our laboratory studies neurogenetic disorders of muscle and pathogenesis of myopathies using in vitro and animal models. The Research Technologist will be responsible for maintaining animal colonies, performing behavioral, electrophysiological and histological assays to evaluate muscle and helping with cell culture studies. This role will provide opportunities for significant scientific input and has publication potential.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Working under the supervision of Dr Mohassel, the Research Technologist will assist and conduct experiments using a variety of techniques.
  • These include animal husbandry and genotyping, tail vein and intraperitoneal injection, behavioral assays (rotarod, grip strength, treadmill, hanging wire), physiology of muscle contraction (tetanic force, twitch, etc), drug administration to animals, animal tissue harvest, cryosectioning, immunostaining, widefield and confocal microscopy and cell culture.
  • Molecular biology techniques (PCR, cloning in bacteria) and cell culture in mammalian cells including iPSCs will also be widely used in the lab.
  • Additional responsibilities include maintaining an up-to-date lab notebook, maintaining the lab inventory, attending weekly laboratory meetings and assisting with ordering laboratory supplies and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Neuroscience, Biology or a related field is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

    Prior experience in a biological research laboratory is preferred, particularly with the techniques described above.
  • Some post-undergraduate work experience is preferred but not required.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • A willingness to work with mice is necessary and experience with rodent techniques and cryosectioning is preferred.
  • Proficiency with basic laboratory skills and methods (pipetting, buffer preparation, PCR, western blotting, immunofluorescence, molecular cloning, and aseptic cell culture) is preferred.
  • Excellent organization skills are essential.
  • Talented, hardworking, and highly motivated.
  • In depth training will be provided for skills not yet mastered.
