The Shop Technician will be responsible for operating and maintaining a safe and clean fabrication shop for the School of Architecture. Together with the Shop supervisor and manager, the technician will provide instruction and oversight in the use of power, hand, and digital tools for fabrication in a number of media for students, faculty, and staff. Requires extensive knowledge of metal, wood, plastic, and digital fabrication techniques.
# HEJ Qualifications
  • College degree in related field (Industrial Design, Architecture, Furniture Design, Sculpture, Theatrical Technical Direction, etc.) or relevant work experience.
  • Minimum 2 years teaching, preferably in a shop-related field.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of metal, wood, and plastic fabrication techniques.
  • Knowledge of use of laser cutter equipment desired.
  • CNC router experience desired.
  • 3D printing knowledge a plus.
  • Proficiency with one of more of the following: Rhino, AutoCad, Solidworks, Inventor, Grafite.
  • Adobe Creative Suite knowledge is a plus.
  • Provide instruction and oversight on the use of power tools, hand tools, and material processing strategies for fabrication in metal, wood, plastic, etc., for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Participate in training for students at all levels in the Architecture curricula.
  • Maintain health and safety standards as dictated by University and government regulation.
  • Assist in developing and providing training sessions for students focused on safety.
  • Maintain and repair equipment as necessary, implement upgrades.
  • Maintain inventory of materials, equipment, machine parts, and hand tools.
  • Ensure all equipment is in safe and general working order.
  • Supervise work study students as needed.
  • Work with the Manager and Supervisor of fabrication facilities to review and improve shop practices and interfaces with Architecture curriculum.
