Department Summary
This position is a collaboration between the Northwest Indian Language Institute (NILI) and the Department of Linguistics.

NILI serves the UO, the Northwest, and tribal communities nationwide and reports to the School of Global Studies and Languages. It works with tribal partners in many areas including curriculum design, distance learning, and materials development while simultaneously meeting the articulated needs of tribal communities. NILI is among a handful of programs that plays a role in attracting, retaining, and educating indigenous students at UO. NILI is an established program that directly supports indigenous students and their communities. It meets multiple UO goals. It supports 1) graduate and undergraduate education; 2) diversity; 3) external relationships with tribal communities.

The Department of Linguistics, an academic unit of the College of Arts and Sciences, provides undergraduate and graduate degrees. The department is comprised of 13 full-time professors and instructors, 27 graduate employees, one administrative position, and one staff member. There are 35 doctoral students, 30 Master's students, and 100 undergraduate majors. In addition to spoken language research, the Department of Linguistics has significant strengths in historical linguistics and fieldwork.
Position Summary
The career Ichishkiin Language instructor will be primarily responsible for teaching two classes per term of first year and second year Ichishkiin (Sahaptin) to UO students. The instructor will develop and adapt the curriculum to the needs of Native and non-Native learners of one of the First languages of Oregon. The instructor will foster relations with tribal custodians of the language at the Umatilla, Warm Springs, and Yakama reservations and other locations by periodic check-ins and sharing of UO-developed materials and curriculum. The instructor will collaborate with campus Native organizations such as NILI, Native Strategies, IRES, and NASU to help shape and promote issues related to Native languages, language endangerment, and revitalization, and Native student issues on the UO campus and in the wider community.
Minimum Requirements
  • Masters's degree in Language Teaching, or a related field.
    or
  • Three years of experience teaching Ichishkiin to college-age, adult, or other learners.
  • Sufficient language skills in Ichishkiin and in English to teach at any level within the curriculum.
    Professional Competencies
  • Knowledge of current theories and methodologies in teaching and learning language.
  • Knowledgeable about the culture of Ichishkiin-speaking people.
  • Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues and the community.
  • Commitment to and experience with teaching diverse university student populations, including first-generation college students and Native students.
  • Ability to balance the language learning needs of Native and non-Native students.
  • Experience, access, and ability to work with Ichishkiin language resources including elders, proficient speakers, linguists, and language documentation.
  • Experience in using and adapting language documentation and original source materials for pedagogical environments.
  • Experience in developing and providing access to online materials for Indigenous language teachers and learners.
  • Active in professional organizations in the field of language revitalization.
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Terminal degree in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Education, or relevant related field.
  • Background in language revitalization and/or documenting or working with endangered languages.
  • Coursework in multicultural education.
  • Experience working with tribal governments and/or culture or language departments.
  • Experience in Ichishkiin language documentation.
  • Familiarity with technology tools used in language revitalization.
  • Experience in implementing classroom technology for remote/online learning and HyFlex and Hybrid models to support Elder involvement and collaborative involvement with classes at other locations.
