The Assistant Director of the Small Business Development Center ( SBDC ) will support business advising, training, event coordination, and assistance to regional clients in conjunction with the SBDC Regional Director for the partners and stakeholders for small business engagement in the SBDC twelve-county region. The Assistant Director (AD) will work to build economic impact by supporting a wide range of small businesses on a variety of topics in their efforts to start and grow. Those topics will include innovation, tech commercialization, and access to capital and resources. The AD position will be a hybrid position as the Regional Director needs and has a high degree of autonomy.

Essential Job Functions of Position

The AD will provide direct advising services for small business owners and start-up entrepreneurs. Service delivery will include business planning, financial projections, financial analysis, capital acquisition options, market research, feasibility analysis, marketing strategies, technology development, project management and other small business needs related to innovation and providing a conduit to resources. The primary goal of the AD is to assess business feasibility, growth, and job potential, along with facilitating training and delivery of services in the region. The AD will also support the mission of the Washburn University SOBU by connecting students and faculty with small businesses.

The AD will work with the Regional Director, stakeholders, university personnel, and industry experts to develop specialized training and mentors to support state and local initiatives, including innovation and technology initiatives.

The AD will collaborate with the Regional Director to deliver and facilitate small business seminars and other training events by developing content, selecting and engaging instructors and industry experts, and promoting event offerings in the NE Kansas communities within the service area.

The AD will be responsible for engaging in community relations activities in the service area by promoting the services and programs of the Washburn University Kansas SBDC, including meeting with bankers, economic development persons, and small business service professionals.

In addition, the AD:

Will complete administrative work associated with client counseling, including preparing for and scheduling client meetings, follow-ups, reports, and data entry into a client database.

Will be responsible for attending and participating in KSBDC team meetings, WU Kansas SBDC staff meetings, and other state-wide KSBDC events, such as Legislative Day and Small Business Awards Day.

Will support the Washburn University SOBU International School of Business and the Regional Director to facilitate connections with the Kansas Department of Commerce and their International Trade division for networking opportunities, internships, mentors, and cultivating partnerships.

Required to maintain/acquire personal and professional development in international trade, tech commercialization, innovation, tech coaching, access to capital, and other relevant topics to support the economic growth of small businesses.

Will perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Non-Essential Job Functions of Position

Networking, information requests, and community relations.

Education and Experience

Master’s degree. Four years of experience operating a small business, or four years of experience advising small business owners.

Preferred:
Experience working in higher education or directly with post-secondary students.
Experience working with urban and rural businesses.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Required:
Event planning. Effective communication and personal computer use skills.
Commitment to and demonstrated successful experience working with diverse populations.
Proven ability to work autonomously.

Preferred skills and expertise include education, certifications, and/or experience in the following subjects: International business, tech commercialization assistance, working with access to capital, and banker relations.
Using small business accounting software programs.
Project management experience, at least two years.

Licenses, Certifications & Registrations

Preferred: A valid driver’s license and driving record that meets University standards.

Additional Requirements (e.g. Physical Demands)

The AD is responsible for using PPE in public as needed and will be supported in remote work by WU. The AD is required to provide or obtain personal transportation to and from various training, conferences, events, meetings, etc., at various locations throughout the region as required to perform the essential functions of the position.
