About the Position:

 

This is a full-time civilian faculty position at the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) as provided under Title 10 USC 4021. Initial appointment will be up to five years, the first two years may be a trial period. The appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments thereafter. Starting date is negotiable but no later than 5 July 2023. Academic rank and salary will be based on the selectee's academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments.

Duties:

 

Advising the Commandant on all academic matters and serving as a key member of the executive leadership team.

 

Serving as approval authority for academic matters and faculty actions.

 

Synchronizing efforts to enable academic excellence, research relevance and integration, strategic planning, change management, institutional improvement, and faculty management.

 

Ensuring delivery of high quality, coherent, and rigorous academic programs, making use of best practices to support joint education, leader development, and scholarship.

 

Responsible for the relevance and efficacy of all academic program curricula design and delivery, research, and academic support functions.

 

Ensuring that the College and its programs maintain full Army, regional, and joint military accreditation.

 

Leading stakeholder engagement for the planning and assessment of academic programs, courses and curricula including new academic program requirement validation, design and development.

 

Chairing key governance boards and representing the USAWC at the strategic level, particularly in venues relating to academics and professional military education.

Qualifications

The Provost reports directly to the Commandant (President) and serves as the USAWC's chief academic officer and senior supervisory professor. Although supervisory professors at the USAWC typically possess strong academic credentials, the Commandant selects them principally for their skills in enterprise leadership.

 

Our intent is to hire as the Provost, an accomplished teacher, scholar, and leader willing to embrace Army values and exert positive and dynamic leadership at the institution level. The Provost must have the capability and temperament to help achieve integration and synergy among the Army War College entities and externally in the education enterprise. The selectee must have expertise in a discipline relevant to national security and familiarity with professional military education at the senior level. Additionally, he/she must have experience in progressively senior positions in higher education. Finally, the selectee must be able to work collegially at a military institution and operate effectively within the federal and military bureaucracies, all while embodying the finest traditions of civilian academia.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):. Applicants will be rated based on the criteria listed below by a panel of subject matter experts appointed with the purpose of identifying the best- qualified candidates.

 

Ph.D. (or other terminal degree) in a discipline relevant to national security at the strategic level.

 

Strong executive skills and experience in enterprise leadership. Senior-level experience in government and/or the defense sector is desirable.

 

At least four years of experience in higher education administrative positions of substantial responsibility in both academic and administrative management. Familiarity with joint professional military education at the senior level is desirable.

 

Knowledge of the workings of the Department of Defense and the Department of the Army is highly preferred.

 

Ability to exert strategic influence over complex organizations through envisioning, goal setting, team building, planning, implementing, and assessing.

 

Experience with joint military and civilian regional academic accreditation.

 

Record of scholarship and teaching commensurate with the rank of full professor.

 

Experience building institutional inclusiveness and diversity.

 

Refined verbal, writing, and representational skills.

 

Education

 

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
