Assistant of Associate Professor, Oral Communication Program

 

 

The Department of Communication in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland, College Park invites applications for a full-time, tenured/tenure-track position in Oral Communication at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The starting date for the position is August 23, 2023.

 

 

The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to serve as the Director or Co-Director for the Oral Communication Program (OCP). The ideal scholar will have a research program that emphasizes one or more of the following: communication education, instructional communication, critical communication pedagogy, and/or anti-racist teaching. As Director or Co-Director of the OCP, the candidate will oversee COMM 107 and COMM 200, which are multi-section presentational speaking courses that fulfill the oral communication requirement of the Fundamental Studies category of the University’s General Education Program. The courses enroll approximately 3,800-4,000 undergraduate students per academic year and are taught primarily by graduate teaching assistants and professional-track faculty. Candidates should have demonstrated a commitment to and experience with inclusive pedagogies, meaningful learning outcomes assessments, and mentorship of a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate students. The OCP Director or Co-Director will provide support in teaching a one-credit course in communication pedagogy for new graduate assistants. The candidate will be involved in supervising graduate assistants who support the OCP. The candidate will also join a team of two professional-track faculty members who provide administrative leadership in the OCP and serve as managing directors of the program, including the managing director of the department’s Oral Communication Center.

 

 

The Director or Co-Director will also ideally specialize in one of the following: civic participation, community engagement, public and/or digital humanities, applied social science research, and/or support for NGOs, non-profit, or social justice organizations in crisis, health, political, risk, science, or strategic communication that advances the Department of Communication’s guiding principle: Communication for the Public Good. This candidate should be able to evidence their commitment to providing mentorship and training in anti-racist pedagogy. Experience with or interest in pursuing extramural funding is highly desirable.  

 

 

Candidates must have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment and the clear potential to establish a strong, active research program and conduct graduate advising. In addition to research and teaching in their area of specialization, the ideal candidates will contribute to the department’s strengths in Communication Science, Media & Digital Studies, Public Relations, or Rhetoric & Political Culture. Ideal candidates will likewise be able to contribute to the teaching of critical-historical, qualitative, and/or quantitative methods classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teaching experience at the university level is expected.

 

 

 

The Department of Communication offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Communication. The undergraduate Communication major is the largest major in the College of Arts & Humanities and has ranked in the top ten largest majors on campus. The undergraduate public relations program is certified by the Public Relations Society of America. The department has three research centers: the Center for Health and Risk Communication, the Mark and Heather Rosenker Center for Political Communication and Civic Leadership, and the newly founded Black Communication and Technology Lab.
