Assistive Technology and Disability Services Coordinator - Center for Students With Disabilities




ATTENTION:


The Assistive Technology Coordinator and Disability Services Coordinator supports the integration of students with disabilities into the UW-Whitewater community through direct student service, meeting accommodation needs, and ensuring equal access to all university print and electronic instructional materials.

JOB DETAILS:

The Assistive Technology Coordinator manages the alternative text production process and ensures quality control of the conversion process. This position requires someone with attention to detail and the ability to creatively problem solve technology solutions.

The Disability Services Coordinator works directly with students, conducting intakes, reviewing documentation, and facilitating accommodations. This position may also participate in campus-wide training activities for students, faculty, and staff on disability issues, rights and responsibilities under the law, and advocacy regarding reasonable accommodation in a post-secondary environment.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors’ degree in Education, Vocational Rehab, Social Work, Special Education, Instructional Technology, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Two or more years of direct experience working with individuals with disabilities, particularly those using assistive technology.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference is given to applicants who have worked with a college or young adult population.
  • Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Special Education, Instructional Technology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Preference is given to individuals with at least one year of experience with Assistive technology
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • The ability to prioritize and manage the two unique components of the job: assistive technology and direct student services.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state laws regarding disability rights.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as contribute to team processes at the unit and division level.
  • Work within the Social Justice Model of Disability and support all student identities within the Division of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Support Programs.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assistive Technology Coordination – 40%
  • Maintain Accommodation Management Software System (AIM).
  • Assess student technology needs, with an understanding of students with visual disabilities, learning disabilities, and complex physical disabilities.
  • Recommend technology for CSD and provide guidance on campus committees for students’ technology needs across campus.
  • Provide training to students and staff related to technology.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility and usability standards including WCAG 1.0 and 2.0.
  • Expertise in current assistive technology including but not limited to voice output (preferably JAWS, Kurzweil 3000, TextHelp), voice recognition, text enlargement (preferably Zoomtext), OCR, Braille translation programs and Braille embossers, Audio Notetaker/Glean, smartpens, and other technology used in an academic setting (web sites, learning management and course presentation software [e.g. Canvas, Desire to Learn, Blackboard, Google Documents etc.).
  • Responsible for basic maintenance and assistance in updating the CSD website, all computers, and adaptive technology within the department
  • Monitor, update and keep records on adaptive software and equipment.
  • Maintain inventory of CSD technology, and student check-out and check-in process for assistive technology loaned to students.
  • Train and supervise the Alternative Media Graduate Assistant and associated student and volunteer staff on the use of adaptive technology for document conversation and alternative testing purposes.
Direct Student Service- 60%
  • Conduct intake appointments leading to a service eligibility determination and recommendations for reasonable accommodations as appropriate.
  • Assist students in understanding their legal rights and responsibilities.
  • Promote student self-reliance and the development of appropriate self-advocacy skills.
  • Facilitate communication between faculty, staff, and students with disabilities on access and accommodation issues and provide on-going consultation and problem-solving assistance to faculty and staff in the provision of appropriate services and accommodations.
  • Develop new and effective methods for resolving complex disability-related accommodation and adjustment issues.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians of student clients respectfully and appropriately in a way that supports the development of student independence and accountability.
  • Maintain confidentiality in verbal and written communications as required under the Family Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Create, organize, and maintain up-to-date electronic and paper records.
  • Stay abreast of legislation/policy and national, state, and local issues affecting access for individuals with disabilities
  • Other Duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $49,000 – $55,000
