The University Center invites applications for a Mail Clerk/Carrier III to join their team. Working under the direction of the ShipEx Supervisor, this position will assist customers with their shipping needs by providing US Postal Services (USPS), FedEx, and United Parcel Services (UPS) shipping, custom packaging, and retail packaging supplies to the campus community. Additional services offered at ShipEx includes serving as the University Center lost and found, rental of lockers, private mailbox rentals, and management of posters/banners.

Key duties and responsibilities include:
  • Provides an efficient, prompt, service-oriented mail service for the University campus and community by providing quality mail service, receiving and distributing USPS and campus mail, weighing and sending packages and all classes of mail, weighing and sending packages and all classes of package delivery, and collecting outgoing mail for pick-up by the postal service according to Federal Postal Regulations.
  • Promotes a professional, service-oriented mail service operation by answering inquires concerning campus and USPS, FedEx, and UPS mail services and regulations, explaining rates, special types, classes of mail, and packaging requirements, and advising mail service patrons on the most appropriate category and class of mail to meet their needs.
  • Provides assistant to ShipEx supervisor in opening and closing duties, maintaining accurate stamp counts, compiling daily sales information and deposits.
  • Accurately represent the department and institutional mission and values through behavior and model desired behaviors and teach through example.
  • Participate in training and mentoring of new UC ShipEx Student Mail Clerks.
  • Inventory tracking and supply ordering.
  • Schedules student mail clerks for the regular semesters, winter break, and summer break.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the ShipEx by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Skills
  • General knowledge in shipping options, special services such as overnight, priority, insured and certified.
  • Thorough knowledge of renting private mailboxes, renting lockers, postering procedures, and managing UC lost and found.
  • Proficient with the use of PC’s, Postage Meter Machines, scales, Postal Mate software & University sorting schemes.
  • Knowledge in and commitment to following purchasing policy and procedures.
  • Ability to learn quickly with transferrable knowledge and experience with the use of PC’s, FedEx, USPS, & UPS shipping systems, regulations, requirements and procedures.
  • Ability to become proficient with the use of PC’s, Postage Meter Machines, scales, Postal Mate software & University sorting schemes.
  • Commitment to learning all University, ICC, US Postal Service, and other vendor policies, procedures, rules, regulations, requirements, rates and forms and be able to convey this information to the campus community.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Illustrate a general knowledge of all functional areas within the UC and UM.
  • Excellent customer service skills; relationship-building and ability to work effectively with diverse internal and external customers, departments, agencies, and individuals; interact with students and staff in a consistent and equitable manner.

  • Proficient at basic cash handling and balancing a till.

  • Ability to teach others/share knowledge; and an intrinsic interest in and the motivation to learn without prompting.
  • Ability to communicate openly and honestly while respecting the perspectives of others.
Physical Demands

  • Duties require stamina and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, which requires mobility and physical demands.
  • Ability to work in an environment that lends itself to many interruptions, may sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to move loads up to 70 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 120 pounds with assistance, which requires mobility and physical demands.
Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment .

Minimum Required Experience
  • High School diploma and one(1) year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • One (1) year experience working in a post office, shipping center or retail.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office programs.

Position Details

Position Title: Mail Clerk/Carrier III

Position Number: NEW

Department: UC

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), 8 AM - 5 PM or 9 AM - 6 PM Monday – Friday, 12 months/year

Salary: $16.266/hrCurrent employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
