The University of Wisconsin (UW) System offers a comprehensive benefits package to meet the diverse needs of our community. The University contributes towards the cost of several benefit plans. Job Summary
This position is primarily responsible for implementing UWM's self-haul recycling program, including planning daily/weekly program logistics, collecting and processing recyclable materials from across the UWM campus, and coordinating paper commodities services. Operates large trucks and heavy equipment to collect, transport, and consolidate several waste and recycling streams from the institution while ensuring environmental compliance. This is semi-skilled work requiring significant autonomy, monitoring of changes in service level needs, and prioritization of tasks. Supports other departmental programs as directed, including supporting Surplus metal and e-waste collection and recycling. This position performs all duties in a professional manner, with an emphasis on customer service, interacting with multiple departments daily, while also serving as model representatives of the Office of Sustainability.

This is a 1st shift position, Monday - Friday (7:30AM - 4:00PM)
Starting salary range, depending on experience: $17-19/hour

Minimum Qualifications
Applicants for this vacancy must:
  • Possess a strong mechanical aptitude
  • Possess the ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule with some weekends as needed (must be able to work during Move-Out periods, which are typically around the 2nd-3rd week in May, and Move-Out Festival typically the 3rd or 4th weekend in May)
  • Must be able to handle odors
  • Ability to stand, walk, push, pull, and sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in a range of environments and weather
  • Ability to regularly handle and lift heavy objects, up to 50 lbs. at a time
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License
  • Ability to obtain a Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)


Preferred Qualifications
Highly qualified candidates will also have:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and interested in recycling and waste diversion
  • Possess motivation to continually expand knowledge and expertise around the role and the recycling and waste industries
  • Ability to maintain a safe, clean, and positive work environment
  • Proven ability to operate large vehicles in high-traffic areas and in stressful situations, such as a campus setting
  • Ability to work under pressure, handle stressful situations, and maintain flexibility
  • Ability to understand safety rules, operations and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to work independently or in small groups
  • Ability to maintain healthy campus and contractor relationships
  • Demonstrated experience using forklift, compactors, and balers
