Dean, Student Development - Central Campus

FUNCTION: Serves as the student development officer for their respective campus. Responsible for leading, supervising, evaluating, coordinating, and directing the educational planning/advising, dual credit, career services, promise scholarship program, international student programs (South Campus), and veteran services (Central Campus) teams along with the college's commencement activities and associated student success, retention, and completion initiatives.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Promote excellence, creativity, leadership, cooperation/teamwork, and accountability throughout the campus student development team while upholding the institutional mission, vision, and goals.
  • Collaborate with counterparts to support the one college philosophy to achieve expected goals and objectives of the college.
  • Develop, recommend, and manage the assigned campus budgets within student development area to ensure available dollars are effectively utilized. Ensure operational costs are in line with relevant budgetary controls.
  • Consult with Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Services and Student Services leadership team to plan, implement and evaluate the programs and services of the college to maintain a personal and professional commitment to the success of SJC and its diverse community and student body.
  • Ensure regular and consistent evaluation of staff and make appropriate recommendations in accordance with college policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate timely, professional communication and problem resolution strategies while working with various departments, campus employees, and district personnel to plan, implement, evaluate, and provide reports for programs and services that support institutional goals.
  • Work with Campus Provost and leadership team to determine campus needs and implement services.
  • Implement the College's completion agenda and the College's strategic transformation plan and demonstrate, through long term and annual operational plans, how the strategy will be achieved.



Marginal Job Functions:

  • Ensure consistent uniform application of all functions, processes, and services within the student development area on the campus.
  • Represent SJC, as required, by participating in state and local councils, committees, boards, organizations, and state and national conferences.
  • Implement programs and services on the campus that support both the accomplishment of the College's mission and the continuation of the College's accreditation status.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in student services and the ability to create and implement "cutting edge" progressive initiatives.
  • Ability to organize and implement change.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to keep current on changes in technology and provide recommendations regarding the direction of the campus's strategic plan.
  • Ability to safeguard sensitive or confidential information from intentional or unintentional disclosure.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the community college mission and philosophy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of student development theory in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of laws pertaining to higher education including, but not limited to, due process, student conduct, Title IX, VI, and ADA.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to establish personal and professional credibility with both internal and external constituents.
  • Demonstrated expertise in project planning, development, implementation, and analysis.
  • Effective leadership and ethics techniques, including Servant-Leadership principles.
  • Ability to prepare and present information and summary reports internally and to the public.
  • Ability to effectively apply theoretical and practical competencies involving student development, mediation, and conflict management.
  • Demonstrated success in working with students, staff, and faculty resolving conflicts, and complaints (and assessing/mitigating risks).



Required Education:

  • A master's degree in higher education administration or related field from a regionally accredited college or university.



Required Experience:

  • Four (4) years of higher education administration experience.
  • Direct experience in the following areas: student affairs/student services, academic and career advising, counseling, dual credit, student onboarding, or admissions.
  • Previous leadership experience in a higher education environment required.
  • Budget experience required.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in utilizing a student database software system and knowledge and experience with administering and evaluating assessments.
  • Experience with creating and fostering student success initiatives.



Preferred Experience:

  • Knowledge and experience utilizing the Banner student database preferred.



Note: This position has opportunity for remote work arrangements with appropriate approvals and in accordance with the policies, procedures, and needs of the College.

Salary Grade: 34

Salary is based on the Board-approved salary schedule for the current fiscal year. See Salary Schedule
