Job Description

The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking applicants for two nine-month, tenure-track faculty positions to start as early as Spring 2023. The persons fulfilling these positions may begin work remotely but must transition to work in-person on the campus of Fort Hays State University by Fall 2023.

Our new colleague will teach courses that include some combination of Advanced Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Science Writing, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, as well as Introd uctory Biology courses for majors and non-majors. Individuals with discipline-based education research and/or assessment experience are encouraged to apply. Faculty at Fort Hays State University teach a full load (12 credits) of online or in-person courses during the Fall and Spring semesters. In addition to teaching, our new colleagues will have a strong desire to mentor undergraduate and graduate student research and contribute to departmental and university service. Opportunities exist for the development of new courses that complement our current courses and fulfill departmental needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Ph.D. in biology or closely related field. Candidates who are ABD will be considered.
  • Evidence that the candidate can teach general biology courses (majors and non-majors) and at least one other course listed in the ad.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Evidence of teaching (lecture and/or lab) effectiveness in higher education. Teaching assistant experience is acceptable.
  • Proficiency with online-learning tools and resources.
  • Evidence of potential for a sustained research program.
  • Positive experiences mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated active engagement in professional development.
  • Experience with biology-education research.
  • Evidence of contributions to the development of course and program assessments.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT :

The Department of Biological Sciences has 16 full-time faculty positions representing the disciplines of anatomy, botany, ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, physiology, and zoology. The department offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in biology. Graduate teaching assistants facilitate undergraduate labs; additional graduate assistantships are available through the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, and donor-supported research fellowships. In the department, several colleagues with research interests in the biomedical sciences are supported by K-INBRE funding ( https://www.k-inbre.org/ ). Available departmental research resources include a microbiology and molecular biology research equipment, extensive aquatic and terrestrial sampling equipment, excellent computing and GIS facilities, outstanding technical support, large museum collections for plants, insects, and vertebrates, a tract of native prairie, greenhouse, and other related resources. The department is housed in Albertson Hall, which includes technologically enhanced classrooms and laboratories. We are one of the only regional institutions to teach Human Anatomy course with eight cadavers. The department employs a full-time lab coordinator, an office manager, and a half-time greenhouse manager.

Community of Hays

FHSU is located in Hays, a vibrant college town of approximately 20,000, located halfway between Kansas City and Denver on Interstate 70. Hays is the regional center for education, health care, professional services, shopping, culture, and recreation for the western half of Kansas. The community boasts excellent recreational programs and facilities, including the comprehensive Center for Health Improvement, Hays Aquatic Park, Smoky Hill Country Club, Hays Municipal Golf Course, and extensive walking, running, and biking trails. Hays is within 45 minutes of two large lakes that offer great opportunities for boating, fishing, and camping.
