Job Description

Cline Library seeks a skilled, service-oriented, and forward-thinking Content Delivery and Affordability (CDA) Librarian to lead and shape the library's Content Delivery and Affordability unit, which includes Document Delivery Services (DDS), Affordable Learning Materials (ALM), and stacks maintenance.

The CDA Librarian will collaborate with library and university colleagues in the leadership and management of the library's affordability and accessibility initiatives.

The CDA librarian will design effective workflows that leverage technological tools while maintaining a high-level user experience for students and faculty. The successful candidate will report to the Head, User Services and Experience (USX) and join an access and information services unit that oversees the library's service desks, public services and programs, experiential learning spaces, and frontline research and referral support.

Responsibilities include:
  • Oversee the day-to-day management of Affordable Learning Materials (ALM) and Document Delivery Services (DDS) processes including the digitization and delivery of materials in a variety of formats. Identify and implement innovative strategies and services that improve quality, efficiency, and the user experience.
  • Lead a team of staff and student employees whose work supports ALM, DDS and stacks management. Manage individual and team performance and development. Foster an environment that promotes accountability, high performance, staff engagement, and a shared sense of purpose as well as a spirit of cooperation and collaboration.
  • Play a key role in a university initiative focused on affordability and accessibility of course materials. Collaborate with faculty and library colleagues to replace commercial textbooks with licensed library resources or open educational resources (OER). Collaborate with library staff in the selection of digital content.
  • Develop, oversee, and document sustainable workflows and staffing models for the CDA unit that ensure work is completed efficiently and accurately. Use data to assess program effectiveness and make recommendations for program changes.
  • In collaboration with library and university IT staff, research, develop, apply, and evaluate technological solutions that meet user needs.
  • Work collaboratively with library colleagues, vendors and NAU Instructional Design and Support and Disability Resources colleagues to ensure convenient, seamless, accessible, and affordable access to digital content.
  • Provide guidance on open licensing and copyright.
  • Provide outstanding quality customer service to all library users through a highly active Ask Us! information and access services program.
  • Provide information, research, and referral support virtually through chat and web conferencing software, by phone, and through email.
  • Actively participate in achieving organizational priorities through cross-training in other library units. Participate in and contribute positively to library-wide planning and initiatives.
  • Pursue professional development and keep current on trends and developments in open education and affordable content, ensuring that Cline Library remains innovative and responsive to evolving course management and content delivery systems and practices.
  • Sustain flexibility in work schedule to accommodate shifting priorities of the unit.


Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for the rank of Assistant Librarian:
  • ALA-accredited graduate degree from a library and information science program or an advanced degree in a related field.
  • One year of experience working with course materials, interlibrary loan/document delivery, access and information services, or a related area in an academic or similar setting.
  • One year of supervisory experience.

To be considered for the rank of Associate Librarian:
  • All of the above plus:
    • 6 years or more of effective, successful experience as a librarian in an academic library or similar setting.
    • A sustained record of scholarly and/or creative activities.
    • A record of service that shows a pattern of sustained service to the profession and a university community, and the potential to assume a leadership role within the profession.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing and managing affordable learning course materials, and resource-sharing workflows, processes, systems, and technologies.
  • Experience delivering content to faculty or students and using learning management systems and resource-sharing management systems.
  • Experience supervising full-time staff, including hiring, goal setting, performance management, and formal evaluation at the individual and unit levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders utilizing excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments related to open educational resources (OER).
  • Knowledge of library and university practices related to U.S. copyright law and fair use.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and library and university practices related to accessibility of course materials for students with disabilities, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, WCAG 2.0 and assistive technology.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service, including the ability to think critically and work under pressure to communicate with users in difficult transactions.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, prioritize work, learn independently, and respond to changing needs.


General Information

This is a twelve-month continuing status eligible (equivalent to tenure track) academic professional position at the Assistant or Associate Librarian rank. Retention and promotion are earned through achievement of a record of excellence in position effectiveness, scholarship, and service.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. Salary

Commensurate with experience.
  • Assistant Librarian salary range: $58,000 - $64,000
  • Associate Librarian salary range: $65,000 - $72,000

This is an Academic Professional (APF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents.
