SCHOOL OF CLINICAL AND REHABILITATION SCIENCES

The School of Clinical and Rehabilitation Sciences (SoCRS) within the Bouve College of Health Sciences combines skilled faculty with innovative academics to create leaders in the fields of Physical Therapy, Movement, Rehabilitation Sciences; Communication Sciences and Disorders; and Medical Science. Working at the intersection of habilitation and rehabilitation, clinical practice and implementation, data, and engineering - students and fellows engage in cutting edge, transformative research, and experiential learning - preparing them to improve the quality of life and self-care of patients and communities, while promoting and developing innovative approaches to the future of healthcare.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION SCIENCES AND DISORDERS

The Department of CSD is housed within the School of Clinical Rehabilitation Sciences, which is one of four in the Bouve College of Health Sciences. CSD has eight tenured/tenure-track and five full-time non-tenure track faculty members. Three full, two associate, three assistant professors, one associate clinical and one visiting assistant clinical professor hold research doctorates (eight PhD, one ScD); four of the tenured/tenure track and the entire full-time non-tenure track faculty hold appropriate terminal professional degrees and certifications (e.g., AuD, MS, MA, CCC-SLP, CCC-A). Tenured/tenure track faculty members conduct research and teach, and most apply a portion of their effort on extramurally funded research grants or contracts. Non-tenure track faculty members focus on classroom and clinical teaching and training, while also contributing to scholarly research and dissemination of information within their profession. All faculty members are actively engaged in service to the department, SoCRS, Bouve, the University, and wider community.

Programs and associated research activities in CSD have been designed to meet the department's scope. CSD accepts students into an undergraduate 4-year degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (BS SLPA), two combined undergraduate majors in SLPA—one with Linguistics and one with Communication Studies, a 4-course minor in Communication Sciences and Disorders, a 6-course clinical minor in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, a 5-year combined bachelor's/master's speech-language pathology degree, and a 2-year master's program in Speech-Language Pathology. Along with other units, CSD is part of the interdisciplinary certificate program in Early Intervention. Doctoral students interested in working with our esteemed faculty can apply to one of two interdisciplinary doctoral programs in Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences or Personal Health Informatics. Given the interdisciplinary focus of Northeastern, our students are encouraged to form collaborations across departments.

CSD is also home to the on-campus Speech-Language and Hearing Center that provides on-campus clinical experiences for our graduate students and runs a variety of specialty programs focused on specific populations of individuals with communication disorders. Northeastern University invites nominations, applications, or expressions of interest for the position of Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD). The Department of CSD is located within the School of Clinical and Rehabilitation Sciences which is within the Bouve College of Health Sciences.

POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chair of the CSD department is a full-time tenured faculty position leading the department and overseeing all administrative, academic, and research-related responsibilities and activities. The Chair provides academic leadership and strategy for all teaching, service, research, and professional development activities within the department in alignment with the School, Bouve College of Health Sciences, and Northeastern University. The Chair represents and advocates for the department internally in a university climate of rapid, transformative growth, and externally to relevant accrediting bodies and stakeholders. The Chair reports to the Associate Dean for the School and the Dean of Bouve College of Health Sciences to advance the mission and strategic plan of the department, school, college and collectively contribute to the University's Academic Plan.

The Chair is responsible for setting academic and intellectual priorities, maintaining standards of scholarly, academic, and pedagogical excellence in the department, and contributing to the growth and innovation of Bouve College.

Additional responsibilities will include:

• Collaborate with the college leadership, including other department and school leaders, to advance the mission of the college and university.
• Work closely with the college associate deans to advance various areas in alignment with the college goals and vision of the college and university.
• Collaborate with department faculty to ensure the development and implementation of department's governance procedures, including department faculty approved committee structure and other service roles.
• Engage faculty in strategic planning regarding intellectual, scholarly, and academic priorities aligned with the strategic plans of both the university and college.
• Collaborate with department faculty to provide oversight of the development and delivery of academic programs offered by the department, ensuring high quality educational experiences for all traditional and professional students and learners.
• Provide oversight and responsible stewardship of departmental resources, including staff and budget.
• Assign faculty and staff work in accordance with institutional policies.
• Evaluate faculty performance, in compliance with the university Faculty Handbook.
• Evaluate staff performance, in compliance with university policies.
• Ensure that faculty and staff have mentoring and support necessary for their success.
• Ensure that applicable regional and programmatic accreditation standards are achieved, with input and in collaboration with the faculty; assist the university in meeting NECHE standards.
• Collaborate with unit's faculty to implement and monitor assessment plans and quality improvement of academic programs, to achieve departmental excellence in all facets of research, scholarship, teaching, and service.
• Foster a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accountability.
• Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Research & Innovation to expand research.
• Recommend faculty and staff hiring/appointments, reappointment, promotion/tenure, and compensation after consultation with the faculty, according to unit's faculty approved procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have experience in an academic administrative leadership role with demonstrated successes, familiarity with the accreditation process and curriculum development for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SPLA) and Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) programs, university teaching experience, comfortability with collaboration within a complex organization, and a program of research with a record of publication and success with obtaining extramural funding. The successful candidate will be an innovative person with the personnel management skill to build a shared vision that includes sensitivity to and competence with individuals of diverse backgrounds and cultures.

A doctoral degree (PhD or ScD) in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology or related field, from an accredited institution and a track record of scholarship, teaching, and service which merit appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure are required.
