Position Overview:

Manages the Selman Living Lab, UCO's biological field station. This position will teach twelve credit hours of course(s) in the related field on the UCO campus each academic year.

College/Department Overview

The College of Mathematics and Science currently has 135 full-time and over 70 part-time faculty in 7 academic departments. The College serves more than 3,300 undergraduate students in 27 majors and provides graduate programs in Biology, Applied Mathematical Science, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Computational Science, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering Physics, and Nursing. Accreditation/Certification is held by ABET, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the American Board of Funeral Service Education, and the American Chemical Society. Department Specific Essential Job Functions:
  • Exercises and facilitates a wide range of responsibilities regarding the SLL programs and is responsible for assisting the SLL Director and College Dean with strategic planning, including resource needs and workforce requirements.
  • Assists the Director and Dean in developing objectives and setting priorities for short-term and long-term maintenance and development of the SLL facilities, including identifying partnerships and potential funding sources to support the SLL.
  • Teaches 12 hours of university-level classes on the UCO campus per academic year.
  • Maintains a strong presence on the UCO campus to teach; hold office hours; participate in departmental meetings; communicate and collaborate with faculty and staff, including the SLL Director and CMS Operations Manager, on SLL-related issues; and promote use of the SLL.
  • Establishes and maintains a calendar for booking events and activities at the SLL.
  • Coordinates, assists with, and facilitates field trips to the SLL by UCO classes.
  • Assists with and facilitates UCO faculty and student research projects at the SLL.
  • Coordinates UCO outreach activities at the SLL such as Citizen Science Day.
  • Facilitates visits by scientists to the SLL and assists with their research needs.
  • Assists and facilitates activities at the SLL by outside groups, including educational activities, astronomy events, summer camps, public events, college-level courses, professional development trainings, seminars, and workshops.
  • Makes presentations to varied audiences about the goals and activities of the SLL.
  • Works with the UCO Environmental Health and Safety Office to develop and maintain an up-to-date Safety and Emergency Plan for the SLL, and informs that office of all upcoming activities.
  • Establishes a working relationship with both the campus police and fire marshal and the local law and fire officials in the SLL area.
  • Completes annual safety training classes.
  • Develops a plan for making the SLL ADA compliant.
  • Performs regular (at least monthly) inspections of the SLL buildings and facilities, and ensures that supplies are replenished.
  • Coordinates necessary repairs to the SLL through the UCO Physical Plant and/or outside contractors.
  • Hires and supervises an outside contractor to maintain the landscape at SLL and be responsible for the general upkeep and cleanliness of buildings.
  • Performs small maintenance work at SLL as needed, including emergency repairs of buildings and equipment.
  • Evening, overnight, and weekend trips are required as needed, including for emergency repairs and when hosting visits to SLL by external organizations (when necessary).
  • Ensures that the SLL webpage is maintained and regularly updated and develops social media as necessary to enhance the visibility of the SLL on a local and national level.
  • Attends conferences such as that offered by the Organization of Biological Field Stations in order to stay current about the operation of field station physical plants.
  • May oversee student workers and interns.
  • The primary responsibility for this role is teaching. This role comprises more than 50% of its time teaching (including prep time) and providing instructional support.
  • Submits an annual report on activities and use of the SLL.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Scope & Impact: This position is an intermediate-level independent contributor whose actions may have a significant impact on a department's operations. This position may also affect operations of multiple work areas.

Communication & Interaction : Interacts with various levels within or outside the University to provide service, interpret and explain ideas and concepts, as well as resolve issues.

Effective Knowledge: Demonstrates functional expertise in a particular domain. Demonstrates ability to operate independently and without supervision for day to day operations.

Problem Solving & Judgement : Maintains a working knowledge of policies and procedures, generally accepted principles, and methods. Resolves day to day operational issues by collecting and interpreting information. Solutions may include modifying procedures and methods to address new conditions and may incorporate advice and input as needed from supervisor. This role includes broad responsibilities requiring the application of policies to dynamic and complex conditions. Problems generally require significant analysis and judgment. Solutions may include adapting existing policies and systems to address unique situations.

Budget Authority: May provide input into budget development by identifying operational needs and requirements. May assist with research, requirements gathering or other related efforts to develop budgetary requirements.

Policy & Procedure Authority: Primarily responsible for applying organizational policies and procedures and/or determining appropriate process to follow.

Reporting Relationships : Generally reports to manager or higher but may receive basic operational direction and guidance from senior level staff members.

Supervisory & Team Leadership Responsibilities : May provide functional subject matter expertise and guidance to junior staff.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required:

Requires a Master's degree in appropriate discipline, or equivalent work experience, (biology or a related field) and 3+ years of relevant experience in the discipline that provides knowledge of and exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts.

Qualifications Preferred:

A minimum of two years of work experience in a similar agency, higher educational institution, or field station.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Some familiarity with plumbing, carpentry, and power tools sufficient to handle minor repairs to the SLL facilities. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. The ability to work with multiple stakeholders who possess varying levels of scientific understanding. Some knowledge of Oklahoma ecoregions, grasslands, and cave ecology. Physical ability to work in a remote area and in caves under varied and sometimes adverse weather conditions. Functional working knowledge of computers, including word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, webpage development, etc.
