Position Overview:

Performs a variety of landscaping duties (e.g. sod laying, mowing, trimming/pruning tress and shrubs, planting, watering, fertilizing). Sustains grounds of industrial, commercial, or public property; Cuts lawns, using hand mower or power mower; Trims and edges around walks, flowerbeds, and walls, using clippers, weed cutters, and edging tools; Prunes shrubs and trees. Sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides, using hand or automatic sprayer. Rakes and bags or burns leaves, using rake. Cleans grounds and removes litter, using spiked stick or broom. Shovels snow from walks and driveways. Spreads salt on public passage ways to prevent ice buildup. Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs, using gardening tools. Waters lawn and shrubs, using hose or by activating fixed or portable sprinkler system.

May make minor repairs on equipment, such as lawn mower, spreader, and snow removal equipment, using hand tools and power tools. May perform variety of laboring duties, common to type of employing establishment. Uses various hand tools and gas-powered tools to mow and maintain grass, rake leaves, trim bushes and trees, plant flowers and shrubbery, remove dead plants, water and fertilize vegetation and get grounds ready for seasonal changes. Maintains driveways, walkways and parking lots by removing snow and ice. Ensures tools are maintained properly. Performs work under general supervision. Handles basic issues and problems, and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff; Possesses beginning working knowledge of subject matter. Typically non-exempt and does not supervise other staff or students; Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

This position is deemed mission essential. In case of inclement weather or other emergency situations, the incumbent is expected to report to work as directed, provided the process of getting to work location does not put the incumbent into a dangerous situation. Maintains campus lawns by irrigating, mowing, edging, hand trimming, fertilizing, and using weed control methods. Prepares flower beds for growing annuals and bulbs and other areas for seed and sod. Maintains campus trees and shrubs by planting, pruning, watering, spraying, weeding and cleaning shrub plantings. Operates water tanker with pumps, and sprayers as needed. Operates roto tillers, lawn sweepers, sprayers, aerators, and tractors as needed. May assist the Irrigation Technician and waters plant life as needed.

Removes snow and ice from stairs, walks and ramps; tractors, and bobcats to remove snow and ice from drives, parking lots and walkways. Removes, sweeps and cleans around trash dumpsters and containers, and collects rubbish left on campus. Provides sign and fence installation. Available to help with or fully abate a facilities emergency. This may necessitate the use of a radio for after hours call backs. Further, a pre arranged shift change may be implemented for predictable emergencies like inclement weather. Performs duties and complies with needs of special events, before, during, and after the special events are completed. Observes, communicates, complies with and enforces Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) provisions; analyzes supplies and materials used in the performance, training and duties of subordinates of the trade. May move office furniture/equipment and other inventory for departments on campus. Performs other related duties as necessary to support the UCO mission.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required:

Performs administrative or manual tasks. Typically requires general education or vocational training and 3+ years’ relevant experience in chosen field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications Preferred:

Familiarity with the chemicals common to the trade. Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver's License. Must pass pre-employment screening. Previous experience in landscaping maintenance, not necessary.

This position requires a physical. The physical requirements are:
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. regularly and 75 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and carry 200 feet.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and carry up/down 30 stairs.
  • Ability to walk regularly for long periods of time across the campus.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to use and reach with hands and arms regularly.
  • Ability to climb in high places using a ladder or balance frequently.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend and crawl occasionally.
  • Ability to push or pull dolly loaded with up to 120 pounds for 300 feet occasionally.
  • Must have close, distance, and peripheral vision.
  • Depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Pass PFT (pulmonary function test)
