Bowdoin College, a residential liberal arts college, along the coast in Brunswick Maine, is seeking an individual to serve as the inaugural Ombudsperson in a part-time, benefits eligible, year-round position working with a staff of 1,100 regular employees. We seek to further our work to foster a more inclusive environment for staff and faculty in service to our approximately 1,850 students. As a confidential, impartial resource, the Ombuds will listen to concerns, foster communication, and assist in helping employees to understand the resources and options available. While a direct report to the President for administrative purposes, the Ombuds will maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and independence, as aligned with the professional practices of an Ombuds as outlined by the International Ombuds Association.

In this role, the Ombuds must have excellent interpersonal skills and professional experience with conflict and problem resolution. The Ombuds must also be able to comprehensively gather information, analyze it thoroughly and offer creative options to employees. This position provides information, referral to resources, answers questions, and assists in the resolution of concerns or challenges. This role will build a strong reputation of resourcefulness, fairness, credibility, confidentiality, as well as demonstrate cultural competency. They will be comfortable working with various and diverse constituents. The Ombuds is not an advocate, and they have no role in any formal institutional investigative or adjudicative procedures. They do not replace existing campus administrative resources. They will provide the President with regular aggregated reporting of workplace trends, and recommendations for employee engagement and community building.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Provide information to employees on the College’s policies, procedures, resources, and options for addressing concerns.
  • Offer a safe, respectful, and confidential space for staff/faculty to discuss challenges, issues and ask questions.
  • Empower individuals to resolve conflicts through confidential processes such as conflict resolution coaching, problem-solving, and/or facilitated conversations or meetings with individuals or within groups. May serve as a consultant, facilitator, or mediator for two or more individuals, or administrative or academic departments.
  • Conduct outreach and training to educate employees about the role/services of the Ombuds, as well as design and conduct training programs on such topics as Individual/group conflict resolution, effective collaborative communications, coaching/feedback techniques, etc.
  • Adhere to the Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics of the International Ombudsperson Association ( www.ombudsassociation.org )

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Demonstrate professional experience (minimum of 5 years) directly related to conflict/dispute resolution, mediation, and/or counseling is required. Advanced degree is desirable.
  • Certification or willingness to obtain certification from the International Ombuds Association is required.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and sensitivity
  • Strong communication skills including outstanding listening skills, with the ability to cultivate trust and credibility is essential.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
  • Demonstrated experience with problem solving, conflict resolution, mediation, with a diverse group of constituents
  • A professional understanding of and experience demonstrating the importance of diversity, inclusion and belonging is required
  • Capacity to work with people of varied backgrounds, levels of educational attainment and lived experiences is required
  • Experience with generating and analyzing data is essential
  • Demonstrated experience with designing, developing, and delivering training and community outreach on a variety of topics that might include conflict resolution, mediation, coaching, etc. is desirable
  • Knowledge of higher education, residential college campuses, and college governance, is preferred

Standard Work Days and Hours
This is a part-time (20-25 hours per week, 12 months) position. This position is eligible for benefits afforded to part-time employees (Medical, Dental, Vision, accrued Sick & Vacation and Retirement contributions). About Bowdoin
