Academic Coach & Student Success Coordinator 

Job Description:
The department of Academic Support and Coaching Services is seeking an Academic Coach & Student Success Coordinator to assists the Director of the SMART Space. The SMART Space is Champlain's Academic Support Center, which provides direct services to roughly 500 students who total 3,000+ visits each academic year. The qualified candidate will be primarily responsible for overseeing two SMART Space retention initiatives: Peer Tutoring Centers and Academic Recovery programming. Coordinating nine Peer Tutoring Centers involves hiring and training a staff of 40 student tutors, maintaining national accreditation as a tutor training facility by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), and overseeing the management of the Peer Tutoring Centers in collaboration with the Director. Coordinating Academic Recovery programming involves developing curriculum, working with faculty from four academic divisions, and facilitating weekly classes for academically underperforming students. An additional responsibility is to conduct ongoing evaluation of student needs which may lead to other retention initiatives.

Other primary responsibilities include direct academic coaching to undergraduate students. Required proficiencies include teaching strategies related to improving executive function (task initiation/time management, prioritizing/organization/activation, metacognitive strategies/utilizing working memory and recall, long and short-term goal setting, self-regulation), interpersonal skills (active listening, empathy, problem-solving, relationship-building), and knowledge of best practices in appreciative coaching/advising (creating a welcoming environment; using positive, open-ended questions, encouraging students to envision their future and helping students achieve their goals). This may involve facilitating first-year experience programs. 

Ongoing responsibilities include researching, creating, and presenting appropriate instructional materials and collecting data to assess the impact of our programs and determine future needs to meet our department's mission to ensure student success and retention. The ability to foster collaboration between various stakeholder groups is an essential component of this role. Active participation in campus-wide events or committees relevant to supporting our mission will be required. This may include Admissions events for prospective students or Orientation for currently enrolled students.

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience - work in an educational setting required, experience in higher education preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or related field required.  Advanced degree preferred
  • Familiarity with executive functioning research and skill-building strategies required
