Position Purpose
Under general supervision from the Labor Crew Supervisor, responsibilities will cover a wide range of duties related to: set up for major events; demolition services; intra-college moving services; external drainage maintenance; snow removal; repair and maintenance of roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and signs; large-object rubbish and debris removal and disposal; grounds work; collection, sorting and disposal of bulk and contained, compost, universal waste and recycled materials; and general custodial duties as assigned. Operates a one-ton truck and various loading dock equipment to collect, sort, and dispose of bulk and contained, solid waste, compost, universal waste and recycled materials. Performs specific assigned custodial and maintenance tasks to maintain shop area in a neat orderly manner. The work involves bending, heavy lifting, and climbing in and out of vehicles and unpleasant tasks outside in all types of weather. The work requires traveling to all the College’s facilities on and off campus and to the landfills or recycling facilities and locations.

- Two years of experience related to labor operations and recycling and waste removal work as it pertains to the position description.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy .
- Ability to safely operate a one-ton truck and loading dock equipment.
- Knowledge of and ability to operate various vehicles, machines, and hand tools, such as dump trucks, small tractors, jackhammers, shovels, rakes, water pumps, and electric snakes.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical exercise, indoors and outdoors, in all types of weather.
- Ability to operate compactors, balers and other equipment associated with the solid waste program.
- Ability to perform heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying heavyweight objects.
- Ability to routinely lift 50lbs.
- Willing to work extensive overtime for storms, inclement weather conditions and special events.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and in close quarters with others.
- Strong customer-service skills and communications.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Knowledge of the categories and characteristics of compost, hazardous and universal waste and recycled materials.
- Knowledge of safe use of various chemical substance and of handling of hazardous and waste materials.
- Work requires bending, climbing in and out of vehicles and working in cramped or awkward positions.
- Work involves regular lifting and carrying of objects weighting up to 200 pounds.
- Work is performed indoors, outdoors in all kinds of weather.
- Work involves exposure to hazard.

Labor Duties
- Operates and maintains smaller vehicles, such as vans, pick-up trucks, and small tractors used by the Labor Crew.
- For the purpose of setting up a wide variety of campus locations for major special events, such as graduation and award ceremonies, concerts, and large conferences: transports, arranges, and stores furniture, platforms, barricades, and public address, sound and lighting systems, using dollies, hand-trucks, and pallet-jacks.
- Packs, loads, unload, unpack, arrange, and stores furniture, equipment, and supplies using dollies, hand-trucks, and pallet-jacks, and transport these goods between College locations in vans and trucks.
- Using sledgehammers, iron bars, jackhammers, and other equipment, demolishes various construction, such as brick, cement block, sheet rock, and plaster walls. Removes the resulting debris from the premises and disposes of it.
Description
- Cleans and repairs below ground level drainage systems, using shovels, snakes, and picks.
- Repairs, cleans, and maintains campus roads, parking lots, driveways, sidewalks, outside stairs, and gravel and dirt pathways using appropriate methods, such as hot and cold patch or hard pack.
- Repairs, cleans, maintains, and replaces as necessary all campus signs.
- Removes debris and garbage from the College’s fields, parking lots, roads, and provides appropriate disposal.
- Assists other college divisions such as the Office of Residential Life and Rental Housing with various repair and maintenance projects, such as playground and clothesline repair and debris removal.
- Removes discarded large items from loading docks and other areas and transports to appropriate disposal sites, such as landfills and transfer stations.
- Removes snow and ice from roads and walkways using appropriate equipment and hand tools, and sands and de-ices during inclement weather.
Description
Recycling/Custodial Duties
- Collects and sorts by bag color or visible material on a daily schedule bulk and contained rubbish, compost, universal waste and recycled materials from curb side and designated sites.
- At the direction of the Labor Shop Supervisor or Lead, determines priority of pick up, independently or in collaboration with other workers, based on the type and amount of materials at each pick up location and time of shift.
- Adheres to town ordinance and state and federal laws
- Makes subjective quality judgments on the characteristics of the different categories of recycled materials to result in the greater or higher value for the material to ensure proper disposal placement.
- Responds to emergency calls to remove materials to avoid unsightly or unsafe situations.
- Lifts and carries bulk items from facilities including basements or upper floors.
- Identifies hazardous and bio-chemical wastes and notifies Environmental Health and Safety for proper disposal.
- Removes and disposes of the sorted materials (construction and demolition debris, various recycled categories, universal waste, compost, and trash) to designated secured drop off or collection points located throughout campus and as needed to the landfill, recycling facility or transfer station.

- As requested, records and maintains data on recycled items for accounting and financial records.
- Drives a one-ton heavy-duty stake truck with lift and dump features to pick up and transport solid waste materials.
- Conducts a daily safety check and fuels the truck.
- Completes regularly established schedules or responds to dispatch messages for emergency situations, driving over College or public roads.
- Determines the manner and sequence of loading the materials to achieve a safe and balanced load based on the category of materials being hauled.
- Operates a variety of loading dock equipment, such as forklift, baler, hand truck, etc. to assist in the loading of bulk or heavy materials.
- Maneuvers the truck through congested or narrow areas exercising caution when backing up near loading docks and other College facilities.
- Ensures safe operation of the lift and dump features.
- Performs custodial duties and cleaning assignments as assigned for College owned facilities and vehicles; i.e., cleans public restrooms and showers; scours, disinfects, and deodorizes toilet bowls and sinks; wipes and cleans counters/vanities; polishes mirrors; replaces and stocks restroom supplies.
- Sorts recycling as assigned and performs custodial work as needed to maintain the recycling shop, universal waste storage, or storage facilities in a neat and clean manner.
- Cleans around dumpsters and performs other related tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
- On an as needed basis: sweeps dirt and leaves and shovels snow from walkways and spreads sand on walkways at least 3 feet from all entrances to buildings at start of and throughout day.
