Job Description

The Accessibility Resource Coordinator will oversee the staff and the basic operations of the Accessibility Resource Center to ensure the accessibility of programs and services across the Missouri Western State University. This entails the management of data and reports, review of university policies and procedures with regards to accessibility as well direct interactions with students to determine academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and other appropriate accommodations and problem solve any issues that arise. Applying independent judgment and expertise, the Accessibility Resource Coordinator identifies reasonable academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and other reasonable accommodations to minimize the disability-related barriers, addresses individual student issues with faculty and other campus personnel, and follows-up and reviews existing accommodations. This position will conduct student intake interviews, determine eligibility for accommodations, coordinates and implements approved accommodations, and serves as a resource for disability-related matters through attending or supporting orientation, open houses, departmental meetings, and certain student recruitment events.
The Accessibility Resource Coordinator supervises the disability services testing center and staff and collaborates with the Adaptive Technology Specialist to implement assistive technology or other accommodations and resolve issues for students with sensory, physical and temporary disabilities. This position will also collaborate with Student Affairs staff regarding referrals and supportive services, represent the ARC at meetings and assist with coordinating the University’s accessibility advisory committee.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position supervises the Accessibility Resource Testing Center and ARC Testing Coordinator, as well as the Adaptive Technology Specialist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
  • Ensures campus compliance of appropriate laws and regulations in service provision and equal access for students.
  • Possesses extensive knowledge of federal laws pertaining to students with disabilities including section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Meets and collaborates with students with disabilities to identify barriers to full participation in the curricular, co-curricular, and housing environments and determine appropriate accommodations through the “interactive process.”
  • Provides supervision to disability services staff by coordinating, scheduling and prioritizing assignments.
  • Prepares and disseminates communications to faculty informing them of accommodations needed for students with disabilities who are enrolled in their classes. Consults with faculty to respond to questions and resolve in-class accommodation issues.
  • Resolve student complaints regarding compliance with requests for approved accommodations.
  • Mediate conflicts between faculty and students.
  • Assist students in learning self-advocacy skills in communicating with their instructors.
  • Hires and schedules resources and staff, including student workers (note takers, sign language interpreters, readers/scribes).
  • Appropriately documents each interaction with students. Maintains files on students and their specific disability documentation (separate from academic files) and ensures confidentiality. Compiles specific data including number of students with disabilities enrolled, types of disabilities, services utilized and academic majors for both institutional and federal reporting purposes.
  • Coordinates services and conducts informational workshops for faculty and staff relating to disability-related topics.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing clinical documentation, conducting interactive/iterative processes for determining accommodations and providing such accommodations.
  • Ability to manage multiple, on-going and complex case-load of disability-related student matters.
  • Strong verbal and written interpersonal communication skills, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, organization, time management and electronic skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a range of constituencies including faculty and administrators.
  • Ability to relate to individuals of diverse abilities and backgrounds.
  • Excellent judgment, personal maturity, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to remain a neutral party.
  • Strong time management, organizational and planning skills with the ability to prioritize, and manage competing priorities.
  • Strong commitment to confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the application of federal and state laws that provide for an accessible higher education experience for disabled students.
  • Knowledge of models of disability and inclusive educational design and their application in higher education.
  • Skill at developing and delivering professional presentations and workshops.
  • Maintains awareness of best practices for students with disabilities in higher education.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Special Education, Rehabilitation, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of professional level experience working with individuals with disabilities in the postsecondary or related setting.
  • A combination of education and experience may be taken into consideration based on the applicant’s credentials.
  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting and applying Section 504 and the ADA in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Education, Special Education, Rehabilitation, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Minimum three years’ experience working in a higher education disability service position.
  • Experience leading or supervising disability services support staff or office.
  • JD preferred

  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
