Supervises and coordinates the activities of personnel engaged in research and experimental testing. Maintains lab operations. May investigate complaints regarding lab services, equipment, and/or capabilities.Possesses, understands, and applies a comprehensive knowledge in area of specialization. Understands and uses effective management techniques.Duties: Manages the budgets and operations of two or more research laboratories. Assigns, checks, and monitors assignments of lab personnel. Oversees and participates in the creation of annual budgets. Identifies funding sources and applies for grants, as appropriate. Estimates personnel needs to obtain lab and research objectives. Conducts personnel evaluations, recommends hiring and terminations, and performs other management function.Supervision: Operates with considerable latitude for unreviewed action. Reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of personnel.

We are seeking a highly motivated and organized lab manager or senior lab manager for Dr. Vivien-Coulson-Thomas’ clinical research and active animal studies at the University of Houston, College Of Optometry.
Specific duties include managing operations of Dr. Coulson-Thomas’ research laboratories, ordering research supplies, managing inventory, supervising students, keeping detailed record logs, authorizing invoice payments and maintaining animal colonies. Management duties of animal colonies and research includes:
- Maintenance of mouse colonies in breeding, development and execution for high-pace research studies.
- Isolation and culture of primary cells from human and animal tissues.
- Execution of various cell and molecular biological techniques (PCR, Western blotting, genotyping, immunocyto/histochemistry and microscopy).
- Expanding and maintaining primary and immortalized cell lines
- Other animal research as directed under Principal Investigator, Dr. Coulson-Thomas
Time permitting and if interested, the candidate would also have their own research project.
Responsibilities are completed under a strict timeline outlined by the Principal Investigator, Dr. Coulson-Thomas.
Physical Demands
Able to bring, unpack and organize packages from business offices to the lab (using a cart). Able to carry out lab-based assays (pipetting, animal care, etc.) and lab maintenance (washing glassware, autoclaving, etc.), and work at a computer for various purposes (ordering, data analysis, microscopy, lab upkeep, etc.).
Work Environment
Available no less than 40 hours a week Monday-Friday. Working hours are flexible, but the candidate is expected to routinely work 8:30 am-5:00 pm or 9:00 am-5:30 pm with a 30 minute lunch break.
