Job Description

New Student and Family Programs at Virginia Tech enhances the student experience by fostering an inclusive, supportive, and learning-centered environment. New Student and Family Programs is dedicated to supporting the mission of the Division of Student Affairs. Along with the New Student and Family Programs team, the Assistant Director is critical to the development and implementation of purposeful and learning-centered programs and services. The Associate Director reports to the Associate Dean/Director and works collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners to provide on-going programs that support students and families in their transition and engagement at Virginia Tech. The Associate Director will provide leadership to three full-time professionals: the Assistant Director for Orientation and Leadership, Assistant Director for Transition Experiences and Family Programs and Program Coordinator for New Student and Family Programs. The Associate Director will provide programming oversight and support for orientation, transitional experiences, and family engagement. The Associate Director serves and leads departmental assessment efforts, as well as multiple university wide initiatives and committees. The Associate Director will serve as the alternate to the Associate Dean/Director of New Student and Family Programs. The Associate Director will oversee the management of $600,000 annual operating funds.

Additionally, the Associate Director will adopt and practice the Principles of Community as fundamental to Virginia Tech’s on-going efforts to increase access and inclusion and to create a dynamic community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in student personnel, higher education or a related field and work experience in collegiate student affairs, student activities, orientation, transfer, and first year programming.
Demonstrated experience working with families with orientation and transition programs.
Demonstrated organizational, leadership, communication, and public relations skills.
Demonstrated experience in Orientation, Transition and Retention program development, delivery, and assessment.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and multiculturalism and the ability to work with a diverse group of constituents.
Experience in designing and implementing programming or large-scale events.
Ability to design and implement formal assessment and evaluation processes.
Capacity for organizing a wide range of diverse tasks efficiently and effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

Working knowledge of student and family learning, development theory and practice.

Working knowledge of family needs in the areas of orientation, transition, and retention.
Demonstrated knowledge of transitional needs for families inclusive of special populations such as transfer students, veteran students, international students, underrepresented and underserved students.
Advising/supervision experience with ability to lead a staff.
Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
