The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law seeks an enthusiastic and talented individual to serve as the Assistant or Associate Director of Development. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Development and Alumni Relations, this major gift officer will focus on prospect discovery and qualification, utilizing stewardship to cultivate new gifts, and supporting foundation and corporate grant opportunities. The candidate will be joining a creative and committed team in its mission to support and engage the law school’s alumni and donor community in meaningful ways to increase investment in the law school’s students, programs and initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess strong written, interpersonal communication and relationship building skills and remain open to budding responsibilities and expectations as our systems and community of donors continue to evolve.

Applicants will be considered for either a Major Gift Officer I (Assistant Director of Development) OR Major Gift Officer II (Associate Director of Development) level depending on education and experience.

Assistant Director of Development/MGOI Primary Duties:

  • Solicits prospects to meet the University/school's philanthropic needs. Develops and executes plans for the identification, qualification, cultivation and solicitation of major gift prospects.

    • Outreach will primarily focus on discovery and qualification efforts, as well as playing an important role in liaising with faculty and programs on funding needs and priorities where corporate and foundation support would be appropriate.

  • Supports Assistant Dean with Endowment Reports, Pledge Reminders, MOUs, pledge agreements, new account requests, Leadership Scholars, and other donor relations and stewardship-related processes critical to major gift efforts.

  • Develops a set of annual metrics that is comprised of: Total $’s Raised (i.e.: $0-$250K); Proper Portfolio Size; Number of proposals presented and Number of Substantive Visits/Contacts.

  • Contributes individually or in cooperation with others to achieve team assignments and goals. Performs short-term, daily, and routine assignments and actively participates in short-term projects providing meaningful input under moderate supervision.

  • Helps manage the Board of Visitors, along with the Assistant Dean, including providing planning and logistical, as well as strategic and substantive, support.

  • Utilizes development best practices to solve problems requiring moderately complex identification and analysis.

  • Adheres to policies, procedures, and processes to ensure the effective and efficient operation of routine functions.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Associate Director of Development/MGOII will perform all duties of the Assistant Director in addition to the following:

  • Plans and completes short term major gift cultivation with minimal supervision. Performs short-term, non-routine assignments and short-term projects. May participate in long-term projects.

  • Provides in-depth professional-level knowledge to independently solve a full range complex problems.

  • Encourages and supports Philanthropy officers and staff in the completion of short-term assignments and projects. Orients or provides training to Philanthropy officers and staff.

  • Adheres and proposes school standards of operation, policies, protocols, and procedures to ensure compliant, effective, and efficient operations of functions.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR MAJOR GIFT OFFICER I

  • Education:  Bachelor's degree

  • Experience: Three (3) years of philanthropy, sales, marketing, communications and/or other outreach/relationship-building skills through professional or volunteer work, education or internships.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR MAJOR GIFT OFFICER II

  • Education:  Bachelor's degree

  • Experience:  Four (4) years of philanthropy experience with one (1) year of managing prospects in a higher education or experience working in legal education, whether in philanthropy, student services, admissions, or career services.

  • Knowledge of position requirements.

  • Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws.

  • Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.

  • Ability to demonstrate, understand, apply, and adhere to the UMB Core Values of Respect and Integrity, Well-being and Sustainability, Equity and Justice, and Innovation and Discovery.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and strategically with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.

  • Ability to build effective long-term relationships both internally and externally.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills with exceptional attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Ability to complete multiple, simultaneous tasks and prioritize to meet deadlines.

  • CRM database experience preferred.

  • Ability to staff events as needed (including evenings and occasional weekends).

  • Local travel is required, and some national travel is expected.

 

Hiring Range: Commensurate with education and experience (Assist. Director: $77K - $82K/ Assoc. Director: $85K - $92K)
