The department of Biomedical Sciences at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) is expanding and invites applications for a full-time faculty position (open rank, Assistant, Associate or Full Professor). The successful candidate will share responsibilities for medical student education in biochemistry and will join an interdisciplinary team of medical educators who are dedicated to excellence and innovation in teaching and scholarship. WMed is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and encourages candidates from underrepresented groups in higher education to apply. Recent graduates or postdoctoral fellows interested in an education-focused faculty position also are encouraged to apply. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
- Teaching: The successful candidate will have a clear commitment to teaching. Responsibilities for this position include teaching biochemistry content throughout the preclinical years (M1 and M2), as well as serving as the director of a 5-6 week course within an integrated, organ-based foundational biomedical science curriculum for medical students. Demonstrated ability to also teach molecular biology and/or genetics is desired. Additional teaching opportunities exist within a Masters of Biomedical Sciences graduate program, core clinical clerkships, and the graduate medical education curriculum. Scholarship: Successful candidates will be expected to engage in scholarly activities that result in publications and professional presentations. WMed recognizes innovative teaching and scholarship as a basis for promotion. Scholarly work currently performed in the department includes medical education research as well as laboratory-based and community-based research. Opportunities may be available for MD applicants to engage in clinical research appropriate to training and licensure. Service: Participation in department and institutional service is expected.

- Qualified applicants must have a PhD and/or MD degree and experience in teaching biochemistry or related content. Experience teaching in a medical school environment is desirable but not required.

WMed is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Higher Learning Commission. The medical school offers a comprehensive, innovative four-year Doctor of Medicine degree program and two Master of Science degree programs in Biomedical Sciences and Medical Engineering. We train physicians in 10 residencies and five fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. To support our educational mission, we have Joint Accreditation for interprofessional continuing education, which incorporates accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout Kalamazoo, Portage, and Battle Creek. The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.
The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with faculty and administrative offices, student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.
WMed is building upon Kalamazoo’s century-long foundation of drug discovery and medical device development with a strategic investment in clinical, laboratory, community, and educational research. The Center for Immunobiology, Center for Clinical Research, Research Histology Lab, Innovation Center, and Human Research Protection Program contribute to the medical school’s advancement of knowledge through innovation and discovery.
