Job Summary

The College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) welcomes applications for the Assistant Dean of Strategic Initiatives! This position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of Colorado Boulder and is a member of the Dean’s senior leadership team. The Assistant Dean supports the Dean in the performance of university duties and responsibilities and serves as a point of contact for the Dean in coordinating with the Administrative Council, college faculty and students, and other internal and external constituencies. This position serves in a unique and key role at the intersection of the Deans office influencing organizational strategy across multiple departments, functions, decisions, and operations to enable the college to achieve its strategic goals in alignment with campus-wide strategic priorities.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Strategic Advisor
  • Advises the Dean and senior staff members. Coordinates the execution of critical initiatives.
  • Acts as thought partner to help establish strategic priorities, identify metrics for success, and evaluate progress toward those metrics.
  • Builds strong relationships with team members and campus constituents to ensure initiatives and decisions are successfully implemented and opportunities are identified.
  • Coordinates activities to ensure that the senior staff is focused upon activities that advance the unit's mission, vision, and values.
  • Mediates discussions between senior team members and elevates issues for resolution when needed.
  • Supports the Dean in the resolution of challenges across the College and with other partners and organizations across the CU Campus.
Strategic Planning and Execution
  • Coordinates the execution of critical initiatives, including budget and schedule, with college Administrative Council (department chairs program directors), Engineering Advisory Council, key staff members and student leaders. Ensures that these initiatives align with campus mission, vision, and goals.
  • Identifies metrics for success and drives progress toward those metrics.
  • Finds opportunities for communicating about these initiatives and progress toward them, both internally and externally.
  • Serves on campus and college-level committees and performs representational functions on strategically important initiatives.
  • Leads special projects and initiatives brought forward by the Dean and serves on task forces and committees on the Dean’s behalf.
  • Develops and maintains strategic partnerships across campus and externally on behalf of the Dean.
  • Serves as a knowledgeable and trusted intermediary, with the goal of helping to extend the Dean and enhance their time.
  • Reflects the Dean's position in meetings and other forums and/or makes approvals on behalf of the Dean as delegated. Where allowed by University policy, this position may be delegated authority and responsibility for signing documents.
Communication & Information Dissemination
  • Works with the Dean’s Executive Assistant and Assistant Dean for Communications and External Relations to manage internal and external communications including newsletters, speeches, and presentations.
  • Leads the college crisis management team in coordination with communications, strategic relations and operations functions in the college and across campus.
  • Prepares follow-up correspondence for internal and external meetings.
  • Drafts internal and external communications, correspondence, policies and directives. Prepares and edits reports and proposals. Works with subject matter authorities as appropriate.
  • Maintains an awareness of key issues and topics in media outlets, and forwards relevant news articles, speeches, panel discussions, etc., as appropriate to the Dean’s direct reports and other interested parties.
  • Helps to keep the Dean’s direct reports and other key managers advised of day-to-day operational and strategic issues.
  • This position will have supervisory duties to be assigned. We will discuss this further during the interview process.

What We Can Offer

The starting salary is $140,000 - $192,000. Relocation assistance is available within CEAS guidelines.

What We Require
  • Master’s degree in engineering management, business management, education or a related field.
    • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • Six years progressively responsible professional experience in education, government and/or private industry including work in organization management and critical initiatives.

  • Ability to lead and manage work groups, and perform as an effective implementer.
  • Ability to lead strategic planning, policy development, and communication for division, and university-wide projects; able to see ahead clearly and anticipate future consequences and trends, and accurately capture opportunities to adapt and flex.
  • Ability to analyze and assess shifting priorities and lead the organization through change
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize multiple projects or tasks, work in a fast paced environment, and ensure all deliverables are met on time with excellent results.
  • Ability to effectively advise and manage a work group, staff members, and committees.

What We Would Like You To Have
  • Five years organization development, assessment and analysis experience.
  • Demonstrated experience directing and planning critical initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience with data analysis, project management and project reporting.
  • Experience in leading diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Experience coaching or teaching leadership skills.
  • Experience with mediation or issue resolution on leadership teams.
  • Work experience in a higher education community with a focus on strategy and internal team building.
  • Excellent communicator and facilitator.
